In October 2020 ACCIONA took over the concession to construct, maintain and operate São Paulo Metro Line 6. Japan's ambitious project to build a space lift, also known as a #SpaceElevator, is a revolutionary concept that aims to provide a more cost-effective and sustainable way to transport humans and materials from Earth to space. The idea is to construct a massive cable, anchored to the Earth's surface, extending into #geostationary_orbit. The Japanese construction company #ObayashiCorporation, in collaboration with #ShizuokaUniversity, has been working on the space lift project and aims to have it operational by 2050. Concept Overview: The space lift concept involves a 96,000 km-long #CarbonNanotube (CNT) cable that stretches through the Earth's atmosphere. At the base of this cable would be the #EarthPort, a gateway to space located on land at the equator and connected to a sea platform by an undersea tunnel. Construction and Mechanics: The construction of the space lift would begin with the delivery of building materials by rocket to #LowEarthOrbit (LEO). A spaceship would then use #electric_propulsion to ascend to geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), simultaneously releasing the CNT cable with thrusters attached to its tip. Once the cable reaches the Earth's surface, the spaceship becomes a counterweight at an altitude of 96,000 km. The #Climber is a wheeled lift designed to ascend and descend the cable, carrying people and materials. It would travel at a speed of 150 km/h, reaching the altitude of the #InternationalSpaceStation (400 km) in about 2.5 hours – comparable to a bullet train journey from #Tokyo to #Osaka. One of the key advantages of the space lift is its potential to reduce the cost and environmental impact of #spacetravel. Without the need for fuel or the production of toxic chemicals, the space lift offers a cleaner alternative to #rocket_launches. Moreover, each launch is estimated to cost only several million #yen, making it significantly more affordable. Space Solar Power System (SSPS): An integral part of the space lift project is the deployment of a #SpaceSolarPowerSystem satellite at GEO. This system would harness solar energy unaffected by Earth's weather, providing an unlimited and free energy source. Just 45 minutes of #solar_radiation is equivalent to the energy humans use in one year.
