“The Upgrade” Tonight -- about a couple of hours or so after my arrival, many of my apps self-upgraded, including Telegram and WhatsApp but perhaps not WeChat. I couldn't tell but it looks like perhaps all of my Google apps have also upgraded. Maybe they are doing this favor to all those who attended NeurIPS 2024 in Vancouver. The apps seem to work just as well so far. For one thing, on WhatsApp, one can now edit one's messages directly. Something like recall and edit on WeChat, or a similar feature on Telegram, which were around for so many years. This was missing in my earlier version of WhatsApp. Last night, we went to Victoria Chinese Restaurant near Vancouver Fairmont. I thought the dinner was very good... Thank you to all the colleagues who attended, and all the hard work, walking the floors....NeurIPS, like CVPR, is a scene. The emphasis seems to be leaning back towards more theory but there were still plenty of unique problems, datasets and benchmarks introduced in a variety of domains, some new lines of research and architectural proposals, with the new Austrian company NXAI making high but economically attractive suggestions with their debut of their xLSTM series—the intentions and reasons for which are all good. The future, however, remains as always unknown except, perhaps, in certain drastically idealized world or worlds. And then we had the horrible speaking-to-one’s-own-bubble fiasco of the last keynote…. It was exactly the one I had decided not to attend.

🏫Republic Polytechnic Post Open House 2025 #OH2025 Now that Open House is over, I want to dedicate this post to a remarkable young lady 👩🏻, Wee Caitlyn. Caitlyn is a student leader in the School of Infocomm's SOI Club. For Open House, Caitlyn didn’t just lead the #DiplomaInFinancialTechnology #DFT booth. She also led lab tours and managed social media. Even though she had prior experience with the school’s Instagram posts, she was initially unsure of what to do for Open House. Unlike many who might shy away from asking for help, Caitlyn was not afraid to clarify and seek guidance. Once she had a direction ➡️ , she took ownership and expanded on it. Her first post for OH Day -2 showcased the DFT team prepping for Open House. Caitlyn took the lead, rallied her peers, and directed, 📽️🎬 the shots. For her second post, Caitlyn creatively repurposed those, and did this: https://shorturl.at/fFGqz On Open House Day 1, Caitlyn wanted to do something bigger—showcase all the #SchoolOfInfocomm #SOI diplomas from a visitor's perspective. During breaks, you’d find her editing videos on the floor behind the DFT booth. Even after Open House, Caitlyn continued with her e-Learning at night. Though given extensions for her homework, she never used her contributions as an excuse to delay. Caitlyn Wee, I am so proud of you! And Marvic, thank you for supporting Caitlyn sitting on the floor with her, companying her while she did the editing.
