Building relationships with export partners poses many challenges and with U.S. dairy being a new choice, it’s more important than ever to put in the work to build the “sticky” relationships that stand the test of time and the ups and downs of the market. And we’re seeing positive progress. For example: The value of our products is increasing, a major accomplishment in a fluctuating market. Importers are interested in learning more about the high-quality products U.S. dairy farmers are producing, and we’re continuing to position ourselves as a supplier of choice in regions all over the world. Farmer investment in the checkoff continues to provide value, helping establish a united voice, vision and purpose that keeps our industry moving forward. Here in the U.S., we all know and love popular dairy-based dishes like pizza and ice cream. As demand for these menu items – and protein in general – grows across the globe alongside an increasing population, part of the work I’m doing with the U.S. Dairy Export Council is making sure U.S. dairy continues to play a key role in meeting the needs of communities around the world. Commencement of Sales of FUJI ATLANTIC SALMON, the First Land-farmed Atlantic Salmon in Japan Summary: Based on the exclusive distribution agreement signed in April 2022 with Proximar Seafood AS, Marubeni has officially commenced sales of Japan’s first land-farmed Atlantic salmon (brand name: “FUJI ATLANTIC SALMON”). The product was mainly distributed to fishmongers, mass merchandisers, and department stores. ・Japan’s first Atlantic salmon aquaculture project ・One of the largest aquaculture projects in Japan (5,300 tons per year) ・Environmentally friendly business that recirculates 99.7% of the water used through a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) ・Fresh fish can be delivered to the Tokyo metropolitan area on the same day of harvesting at the earliest ・Domestic production uses less air transportation, which reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 57,000 tons per year compared to conventional import processes Going Forward: Proximar plans to ship approximately 4,700 tons of salmon by 2025 and 5,300 tons when fully operational in 2027. Marubeni, together with its subsidiary Marubeni Seafoods Corporation, will provide fresh and sustainable seafood products to the tables through a sales network cultivated over many years in the seafood products sales business while building the brand of FUJI ATLANTIC SALMON, the first farmed Atlantic salmon in Japan. Characteristics of the seafood market in China presented by JOE QIAO at the latest Groundfish forum in Copenhagen Seafood Production in China : China is the number one country in seafood production, with 72.05 million tons in 2023. Aquaculture accounts for 81% of total aquatic products, while capture accounts for 19%. Inland aquaculture makes up 48%, marine aquaculture 33%, marine capture 13%, and distant-water and inland capture 6%1. Seafood Import and Export: Since 2017, imports have rapidly increased, while exports have slowly decreased. More imports are for domestic consumption, with Ecuador/Vannamei shrimp being the number one import to China. Crustaceans are the main import items, while high-value groundfish imports are still small. Seafood Market and Consumption Trends: The market includes wet markets, wholesale markets, traditional retail, new retail, member clubs, and various forms of e-commerce. E-commerce sales have been increasing, with live streaming becoming a popular method for product promotion.The consumer profile for online sales shows that 58% are female, and the majority are aged between 26-451. Economic and Consumption Trends: The document highlights the economic downturn, rising unemployment, and an aging population as challenges. There is a transition from animal protein to fish protein, with seafood consumption per person increasing significantly from 2014 to 20231. Future Tendency: The annual per person disposable income of urban residents has been increasing, making China a potential market despite short-term challenges.
