Renewed attacks by non-state armed groups in Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique are forcing an increasing number of people to flee their homes. Since February, escalating violence in the province has displaced more than 75,000 people who have found safety in resettlement camps or host communities in towns such as Chiúre (pictured). Here, people live in overcrowded camps and have limited access to water, sanitation and health facilities, significantly increasing the risk of diarrhoeal and vector-borne diseases. Supported by UNICEF, MENTOR is working in several districts of southern Cabo Delgado and northern Nampula focussing on: ▫ preventing disease transmission ▫ supporting the health authorities by distributing water with tanker trucks ▫ repairing water sources and boreholes ▫ building and maintaining emergency latrines ▫ distributing chlorine soap and hygiene kits for families ▫ reinforcing training for health technicians. Over the past four months, MENTOR ▪ distributed more than 300,000 litres of water ▪ shared information on disease prevention with more than 28,000 people ▪ distributed more than 18,000 bottles of chlorine ▪ distributed more than 4,500 bars of soap ▪ trained 100 community actors to carry out disease prevention activities in the community ▪ reinforced the training of 60 health technicians ▪ built and repaired 60 latrines and emergency toilets ▪ supported 12 cholera treatment centres and health units ▪ installed 10 oral rehydration points in community. #mozambique #emergency #displacement #conflict #humanitarian #water #community #diseaseprevention #sanitation #wash

In Nairobi, Kenya this week, the World Health Organization launched its Road Safety report for Africa. 👉 Some of the findings include that even though Africa accounts for only three percent of the global vehicle fleet, nearly 250,000 people died from road traffic injuries in 2021. This represents 19% of the global burden of deaths. 👉 Since 2010, there has been a 17% increase in road traffic fatalities across the 47 countries of the WHO African Region, making it the only WHO region to experience such a rise. We must act now to meet the sustainable development goal (SDG) target of halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic incidents by 2030. With a population of 54 million, 15 million Kenyans lack access to safe water and 37 million lack access to a safe toilet. Growing water demand and water scarcity have turned into a notable challenge in Kenya. Access to safe water in Kenya Seven (7) in every ten (10) citizens (68%) have access to safe drinking water. Cholera: Lagos establishes emergency center, UNICEF advocates for water supply Following a cholera outbreak in Lagos, the state government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre at Mainland Hospital, Yaba. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urged the Lagos State Government to urgently provide high-standard water and sanitation facilities to curb the disease. A government statement noted that the centre was convened to address severe gastroenteritis cases across several local government areas. The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, revealed that there were 350 suspected cholera cases in 29 wards, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 deaths. UNICEF’s Lagos Chief, Celine Lafoucrier, emphasized the need for robust healthcare systems and improved water and sanitation facilities.
