The GEM Women’s report is a passion project for me. There are so many different ways to look at #gender disaggregated data. So often we compare women to men in ways that reinforce negative stereotypes about the amazing contributions that women are making to society and the economy. This happens even when the differences are small. “Women trail men in startup rates” hides an important truth: that women are driving economic growth and social development against all odds. What if instead of always comparing rates, we look at gender composition on key development goals like job creation, innovation, and international trade? What if we ask how women and men entrepreneurs are making the world a better place? What if we ensure that every entrepreneur is receiving the necessary support and hard earned recognition to achieve these shared goals? Today, I was at the 2nd Annual Sophia Women and Financial Education Survey Launch. It was a powerful reminder of the unique challenges women face in the financial world. While women often excel in financial management, they face significant obstacles when it comes to accessing capital and pitching to VCs.
