Try learning one song a day by ear, or if that feels overwhelming, one song per week! As a K-12 music teacher, presently 6-8, I am very mindful of the possibilities to alienate students who are in the center of this argument [learn music by ear only or develop music literacy]. Educators are always faced with these 2 groups of learners: I can only learn and play by ear, and I can only learn and play when I see the notes. Since I accommodate ALL K-12 learners, I have to use the balancing act approach to assure that EVERY student can learn based on their personal abilities. I always remind myself that it is not about me, because I am only a facilitator guiding their learning process. Since both approaches require time, the question is: what is the venue? *An after school music class to have fun? or *A required K-12 music class that must follow specific standards and guidelines?

I teach music and during the week I take breaks playing music I like and improvise, create new music, and relax. The process of making music reminds me why I teach music, and re-focuses how I teach (from the viewpoint of a musician). Creativity is central to decision-making and problem-solving skills and strategies and performing music develops these processes and skills. I have learned these important life skills teaching music through Ski-hill Graph Pedagogy Meter Fundamentals - Mathematical Music Theory for Beginners. It used to take one of my students 2 weeks to memorize a line of music. But when we switched his learning approach to transcription, he was able to memorize lines in a single practice session! Practice learning all of your music with the intention of memorizing it.
