Two years ago yesterday, on #worldfoodday, I self-published "Food for Thought: Food Science and Engineering for the Future of Humanity" and chose to forgo all my rights to the #book. It opened up many new avenues, allowing me to meet inspiring people and participate in wonderful events, all thanks to the book. I am humbled and grateful that it has been downloaded about 2,000 times so far. For a free, niche book in science and engineering without any marketing, this level of interest exceeded my expectations. In the prologue, I mentioned that if even one reader were inspired to take action, I would consider this work successful and feel fulfilled because no one can ever predict what that one reader could and might achieve. This was my selfish reason. The reasons for a greater cause were three-pronged, which I explored in each part of the book: 1. Advocacy for Food Scientists and Engineers: I articulate my firm belief in how we, as food scientists and engineers, will play a pivotal role in securing humanity's future by leading the way in creating a more sustainable global food system 2. The front and central role of R&D: I posit why research and development will be the central mindset and effort to transform the food industry 3. A fulfilled career: I share some lessons I learned about building a long-term, fulfilled career journey in this vital space By observing another World Food Day, I am re-expressing my full commitment to this cause and inviting all my fellow colleagues and students to feel empowered to take the initiative and make a positive impact. Because it is us...No one else will do it for us. Words of low hanging fruit wisdom👇 “Call it what you want but for most organizations there are plenty of low hanging fruits, quick wins or whatever you want to call them. They are there because the world constantly changes to offer new opportunities, but we are usually too busy with business as usual to notice. The fruits are basically what you find between the as-is and the what-could-be, that can be activated, implemented FAST. Some growth oriented organizations are naturally harvesting fruits as part of their culture, but most have to stop and change the perspective to even notice a single berry right in front of their faces. Big problems and opportunities holds bigger risk and requires big investments and time. Low hanging fruits can picked and monetized with a fraction of both the time and risk. With limited ressources we need to do a mix of both, but we first need to be aware of the choices we have.” ~ Steen Rasmussen

'Through excitement, fear, a willingness to try, and a readiness to ‘play,’ I’ve experienced the different stages of learning something new — something that required me to step outside my comfort zone. The actual process of making fermented onion honey may have only taken 10 minutes, but internally, it marked a momentous shift. ... This journey of learning reminded me that personal growth doesn’t come from achieving goals, but from taking steps to move forward to the desired outcome, having safe spaces to try, and celebrating small wins. Every small step helped me build trust in my ability to combine ingredients and discern whether the food was still good to eat.' Learn to turn spoiled to precious... Weakness into opportunity! If rotten waste kept for long under dark environment, it turns itself into compost manure useful for agriculture. "If milk spoils, it turns into yogurt. Yogurt is more valuable than milk. If it goes even further, it becomes cheese. Cheese is more valuable than both yogurt and milk. Similarly, when grape juice sours, it turns into wine, which is more expensive than grape juice. You are not bad because you’ve made mistakes. Mistakes are the experiences that make you more valuable as a person. Christopher Columbus made a navigation error that led him to discover America. Similarly Alexander Fleming's mistake led him to invent penicillin. Please don’t let mistakes pull you down. Not only Practice makes perfection, the mistakes we learn from also make perfection. Let the failing journey continue till you innovate and succeed. Cheers! #Failures #Success #Innovate #WeaknessintoStrength #Invention

Unlike other fast-paced markets, our industry requires years of careful planning and patience. Identifying a promising new apple variety, planting the trees and waiting three years or more for the first crop is a complex, capital-intensive and high-stakes process. Yes, ripping out an established orchard to gamble on an unproven cultivar is an enormous risk. But growers must weigh this against the dangers of an even bigger risk: clinging to a variety that is no longer meeting consumer tastes. Dr Hugo Britt shared a summary of the "Short-term strategies for long-term gains" panel discussion from the APAL Industry Forum in the upcoming Spring 2024 edition of AFG - https://lnkd.in/gBabTda8 AgFirst horticultural consultants Ross Wilson and Sarah de Bruin shared data from the Orchard Business Analysis (OBA) and their insights into short-term strategies for long term gains with us at the APAL Industry Forum in Melbourne on 3 June 2024 - https://lnkd.in/gkfrA9E6

What do apple scraps, mistakes and fertilizer have in common? Last week I was able to hold a workshop to share my experiences and learnings from my development program. 10 colleagues accepted my invitation and gave me a great platform to report and actively exchange ideas in a cozy atmosphere. My wish was and is to inspire individuals and I had hoped to be able to provide a few small impulses. Ivana Kurevija inspired me for our project work in the Grow Program when she critically asked "Why doesn't anyone talk about mistakes? When we want to develop and learn, things don't always run smoothly. Mistakes just happen! And what can we learn from them?" This was the of the small seed 🌱 which she planted to follow up in our group assignment and it was part of the exchange within the workshop. We talked about how to learn to deal with mistakes, not to ignore them, but to learn from the experience and, when sharing with colleagues, how to prevent them from getting experiencing respective situations. A saying that I found during the preparation and shared with the team in the workshop was "turn the crap of the past into fertilizer for the future". As an allotment gardener, I know to use as much material as possible to produce good soil and fertilizer for the new seedlings. Why not apply this to mistakes and turn the worse into better for the Future? When I received a photo from Simone Braunias the evening of the workshop, in which she wrote that she had now used the compost for her apple scraps to make fertilizer for the next garden year, I couldn't feel happier. My seedling also already grew. This rather private experience can now certainly be integrated into everyday working life. Let's work together to turn the muck of the past into fertilizer for the future, learn from our mistakes and share our experiences with our colleagues so that we can grow together for the future! For me, there is nothing better than putting my heart and soul into preparing a workshop, investing a lot of time and thoughts into it, wishing I could give something back and got plenty positive feedback in return. In addition to the feedback from the group, the great conversations and the active exchange, I am please about the growth mindset that everyone participating in the Workshop demonstrated. #Inspiration #grateful #leadyourself #colleagues #leadwithpassion #growthmindset

A plant that needs no water and keeps giving fruits year after year. Well, one might think even a cactus in a desert needs some water. How can there be a plant that can give fruits without any water? #innovation is one such plant. Sow it once and then keep on reaping the royalty fruit. Sow 1 of them, reap X fruits Sow 100's of them, reap 100X fruits Sow 1000's of them, reap 1000X fruits An #idea sitting in the brain has zero value. Launch the rocket and keep Rocketing. #skillpower #brainpower

On Teachers’ Day, Let’s Celebrate the Teachers of Our Industry: Spices & Herbs! 🌿🌶️ Today, as we honor the invaluable role teachers play in shaping lives, I’m reminded of the profound lessons we learn from the world of spices and herbs. 🌱 Much like great teachers, spices and herbs are the foundation of the food we eat, bringing complexity, depth, and harmony to what they touch. Every spice teaches us something different: Cinnamon teaches us warmth Pepper adds sharpness and clarity Turmeric symbolizes resilience and healing In the business of herbs and spice, we continuously learn—from the soil and trees, from farmers, from tribal communities. They remind us to stay grounded while embracing growth and change. On this Teachers’ Day, let’s acknowledge not only the educators in our lives but also the powerful teachers found in nature, guiding us in our business and beyond. Here’s to all the lessons we’ve learned and the many more to come, as we continue to blend knowledge, tradition, and innovation for a brighter, more sustainable future. Let’s do better! #SpicExpert #JayantiHerbs&Spice #SustainableProduction #TeachersDay #LearningFromNature #SpiceAndHerbWisdom #ContinuousGrowth #BusinessLessons #Gratitude #Innovation
