Nissan Motor Corporation, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore a potential collaboration within a shared business framework. The agreement allows Mitsubishi Motors to evaluate its participation in a joint holding company that Nissan and Honda began discussing earlier this year. This strategic dialogue comes as the automotive industry faces transformative changes. The MoU builds upon the partnership between Nissan and Honda, formalized in August 2024, focusing on intelligence and electrification in mobility. Mitsubishi Motors has now joined the discussion to examine the potential for deeper collaboration and synergies. Marking the announcement, Nissan Director, President, CEO and Representative Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said: “Honda and Nissan have begun considering a business integration, and will study the creation of significant synergies between the two companies in a wide range of fields. It is significant that Nissan’s partner, Mitsubishi Motors, is also involved in these discussions. We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base.“ Honda CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, highlighted the importance of adapting to industry changes, expressing optimism that Mitsubishi Motors’ involvement could enhance innovation and societal contributions in mobility. Mitsubishi Motors CEO ,Takao Kato, emphasised that the collaboration would maximise synergies and leverage the unique strengths of each company. A decision on Mitsubishi Motors’ participation is expected by the end of January 2025. This collaboration underscores the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, as manufacturers seek partnerships to address electrification and advanced mobility solutions.

Of course the sad state of Volkswagen and German car industry has a variety causes. But nobody could say it was not coming. Germany and the EU are late in investing in green mobility technologies and projects. These need not be cars as consumer product only. A more creative thinking about mass green transport throughout the EU was and is still needed. The EU succeeded in collectively creating Airbus as a major competitor to Boeing.
