Small Changes, Big Impact: Practical Tips for Accessibility during Assistive Technology Awareness Month! 🦻🏼 I have been sharing stories of how assistive technology has empowered me and other incredible voices in the DEI and accessibility space. Today, I want to focus on action — practical steps that anyone can take to make workplaces and communities more accessible! 💥 Here are a few ways to start: --> Caption Your Content: Adding captions to videos makes content accessible to everyone, including people with hearing loss. But did you know 82% of people who use closed captions are NOT d/Deaf or hard of hearing? 👀 --> Utilize Visual & Audio Cues: In meetings, using both visual aids and audio descriptions can ensure everyone stays engaged and informed. --> Encourage the Use of Assistive Tech: Whether it’s through providing hearing loop systems, screen readers, or accessible websites, equipping spaces with assistive tools helps everyone feel included, seen and heard. Every small change can lead to a more inclusive environment. What accessibility practices have you found impactful? Share below! Let’s keep the momentum going for #AssistiveTechnologyAwarenessMonth by creating spaces that welcome and empower all of us! #Accessibility #Inclusion #ThankYou 🙏🏼

In 2018, Whispp was born out of a simple but powerful idea: to give people with voice disabilities the freedom to communicate confidently. The founders, Joris Castermans and Akash Raj Komarlu, were inspired by their personal experiences and conversations with those affected by vocal impairments. They realized that traditional assistive technology wasn’t enough, as tools relying on speech-to-text conversion were often slow, lacked nuance, and couldn’t capture the natural flow of a conversation. This led us to create something new: a real-time, audio-to-audio solution that would convert whispered or affected speech into a clear, natural voice. Real-Time Assistive Voice Technology. “For us, Whispp was always about creating something that could bring people closer, giving them back the ease of everyday conversation.” Over the next few years, our team poured its energy and expertise into making this vision a reality. We designed Whispp’s AI-powered technology to work across phone calls, video chats, and messaging, ensuring users could communicate instantly, without the latency that disrupts everyday interactions. It was challenging, but knowing the impact this technology could have kept us going. Fast forward to 2024, and Whispp is now recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions in the Accessibility category. Each year, TIME’s Best Inventions list honors innovations that significantly impact our lives, highlighting extraordinary breakthroughs in categories like Accessibility, Healthcare, Artificial Intelligence, and Green Energy, with nominations from TIME editors, industry experts, and an online application process. TIME evaluates each entry on several key factors: originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact. This ensures the chosen inventions are unique and genuinely enhance how we live, work, and connect. Understanding Accessible Technology vs. Assistive Technology 🤔 In today's digital landscape, it's crucial to distinguish between accessible technology and assistive technology. 🔍 Accessible Technology refers to products or services designed with inclusivity in mind from the start, enabling all users—regardless of ability—to access information and interact seamlessly. Think websites optimized for screen readers or apps that accommodate various input methods. 💡 Assistive Technology, on the other hand, is specifically tailored for individuals with disabilities. These tools provide additional support, such as speech recognition software or mobility aids, enhancing independence and function. Both play vital roles in promoting equality and inclusion. By integrating accessible principles into design while providing targeted assistive solutions, we create a more equitable tech environment for everyone. #Accessibility #InclusiveTech #AssistiveTechnology
