You probably didn't consider a career in internal audit while you were in school. I didn't. My story is that I graduated with a degree in Finance and landed a job selling insurance at a financial services firm right after school. As it turned out, I wasn't particularly good at sales and was ready to leave after just six months. I had a few friends in school who were accounting majors that were always talking about their goal to get a job at an accounting firm in audit, and how great a role in audit would be to set up a successful career. So I took inspiration from my friends and started applying for any audit role that would accept Finance majors. Almost 100% of those roles were for internal audit roles, and I ultimately earned a role as a staff auditor at one. Since then, I've had the opportunity to meet and interview many internal auditors. Through these interactions, I've noticed several common paths that led people into the field of internal audit. 1. They began their careers at external audit firms and later transitioned into internal audit, either within the same firm or after leaving. 2. They transitioned from roles that interfaced with internal audit or had similar responsibilities, such as compliance or IT operations. 3. They participated in a formal internal audit rotation program, enjoyed the variety of work, and in some cases the travel, and chose to remain in the role. Those are three of the more common themes that I’ve heard - which bucket do you fall into? AuditBoard #InternalAudit #EnablingPositiveChange

Story time! You see most people ask me how I got into Internal Audit? To be honest I don’t even know how I landed here. God’s grace. About 17 years ago, I was privileged to start my audit career in a Big 4 audit firm, Ernst & Young, which I must credit for building the professional I am. After four years in external audit, I jumped out to an unknown space of Internal Audit. My biggest driver of jumping out from external audit was to escape the heavy workload that entailed working odd hours😊 furthermore, it was clear to me I didn’t want to pursue an external audit career up to Partner level. I had the opportunity to launch my internal audit career in the banking sector. And boy was I wrong! about the ‘lighter duties’ in Internal Audit. I found the Real Work in internal audit. Not just on the requirement to execute non-ending cycles of risk-based audit work plans with strict reporting timelines to Board Audit Committees, but also came the reality of the ‘real work’ of auditing your clients as an insider. I had to quickly learn the soft skills of being a good communicator and negotiator, and realized that you can tone down language to communicate an audit finding but still communicate the issue and retain your objectivity and independence. There has been learning, relearning and unlearning. The internal auditor is expected to have 365 degrees understanding of the business/processes, which means you have to continuously upgrade your skills, competencies and subject knowledge. I have come to learn that navigating through organizational politics is part of work that the internal auditor must be alive to. As we celebrate the Internal Audit month, I want to encourage my fellow internal audit professionals that you are gems, you are doing a great job out there even when it may feel unrecognized and unappreciated. Tell me how the world 🌎would run without internal audit/ risk assurance…? Cheers 🥂 to all internal auditors out there doing Lord’s work 🤗 #InternalAuditMonth #Lifeofaninternalauditor #Internalauditorsaregems
