Samsung's pilot solid-state battery production line is now operational, paving the way for potential mass production by 2027. This milestone aligns with the revised targets of CATL, marking a significant leap in battery technology. The transition to solid-state batteries signifies a new era for vehicle electrification, promising faster charging times (up to 10-minute charge time from 20% to 80%) and enhanced safety through reduced risk of battery fires. Moreover, the technology boasts a remarkable increase in energy density (+500 Wh/ kg vs ~250 Wh/ kg for the mainstream EV batteries), with significant improvement of vehicle dynamics. Battery technology is an area of constant innovation. Sodium-based batteries offer cost advantages and affordability, but I wonder: What is the potential for maximizing their energy density, and what steps are needed for large-scale adoption? This includes addressing infrastructure investments and driving technological advancements. Personally, I’m passionate about two key questions: 1) How can we improve battery energy density and safety? 2) What strategies can accelerate scalable manufacturing while ensuring raw materials remain accessible or replaceable? I am extremely proud to be part of Tesla and appreciate the collective efforts of researchers and engineers working on next-generation chemistries. The journey toward a sustainable and resilient supply chain is both complex and inspiring.

Anyone thinking of EV as a wasteful technology because "ICE are more reliable and have more km's range", well here's the answer. If we push the "will" by government and energy lobbies to divest on fossil fuel resources to produce electric power we also have a decrease of CO2 footprint of EV veichles and the CO2 footprint in the life cycle would be so much lower than the ICE technology. The next step is then to re-think how we want to move in the future, considering how much concrete we have in our towns.

Looks like Samsung is going to be a player in the #battery game for a long long time. https://lnkd.in/gqrgK_rH Interesting, what looks like the original #research paper that I could find on Samsung's website was published in March 2020. https://lnkd.in/gq2Un836 How long were they working on that research before it could be published? It just goes to show how long it takes for the really hard #engineering to go from initial conception to #commercialization. You can't move fast and break things for the really hard stuff, huh?
