Let's take a closer look behind the intent. Awarding Body: Unlike the other prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Scope and Criteria of this award (The Peace Prize) can be awarded to individuals or organizations for efforts to promote peace, which may include recent achievements or a lifetime of work. Other prizes are typically awarded for specific achievements in fields like Physics, Chemistry, or Medicine, differing greatly. 🎉 Celebrating Nobel Prize Day: About Alfred Nobel and His Legacy 🎉 💥 The Invention of Dynamite In 1867, Alfred Nobel patented dynamite, a groundbreaking invention that made him a fortune. However, his work in explosives also led to unintended devastation, which deeply affected him later in life. 💡 The Origin of the Nobel Prize In 1888, after the passing of Nobel’s brother Ludvig, a French newspaper mistakenly published Alfred’s obituary with the headline, "The Merchant of Death is Dead," criticizing his contributions to explosives. It is widely believed that this incident, influenced Nobel’s decision to reshape how he would be remembered. In 1895, his will established the Nobel Prize to reward those who bring the "greatest benefit to humankind." 💰 Funding the Prize Nobel left his fortune (over $200 million in today's value) to create a fund managed by the Nobel Foundation. This endowment generates annual returns, allowing the foundation to pay the prize money sustainably every year. 📜 The Original Fields The first Nobel Prizes, awarded in 1901, recognized achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace—fields Nobel believed significantly impacted humanity. 🎉 Fun Fact ➡️ The "Nobel Memorial Prize" for Economics was added in 1968, funded by the Swedish central bank to celebrate its tercentenary, and is not an original Nobel Prize. ➡️ The Nobel Peace Prize is unique—it’s awarded in Oslo, Norway, rather than Stockholm, Sweden. ➡️ The Nobel Price must be awarded to a living (at the time when the award is announced) person. What’s your favorite Nobel Prize-winning achievement? Share below! ⬇️

The Nobel Prizes have a unique selection process that ensures they honor the most outstanding contributions to humanity. Here’s a quick breakdown of how it works: 🔹Stage 1: Nomination Process The Nobel Committee sends out 3,000 nomination forms each September. Eligible nominators include renowned academics, former laureates, and members of relevant committees. Nominations must be submitted by January 31 of the award year. The Committee then shortlists about 300 candidates. Nominee details remain confidential for 50 years. 🔹Stage 2: Selection Process Subject-matter experts review the nominations, creating a report for the prize-awarding bodies. Four organizations award the six Nobel Prizes: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences – Chemistry, Physics, Economic Science Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute – Physiology/Medicine Swedish Academy – Literature Norwegian Nobel Committee – Peace A majority vote finalizes the laureates, and up to three individuals can share an award. Winners are announced in October. 🔹Stage 3: Award Ceremonies Held on December 10, or “Nobel Day,” marking Alfred Nobel's death anniversary. Ceremonies for most prizes occur at the Stockholm Concert Hall, while the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo. This intricate process celebrates groundbreaking work and honors those whose contributions make a global impact. #NobelPrize #NobelPrize2024 #AcademicWriting #Science #Innovation #ResearchExcellence #ScientificRecognition #AwardProcess #ScienceCommunication #GlobalImpact #NobelPrizeCeremony #AcademicCommunity #KnowledgeSharing #ScientificDiscovery #ResearchInsights

#FoodForThought The Nobel Prize serves to educate us about the accomplishments of some of the greatest minds of our time. This article by Sam McKee focuses on 5 Nobel Laureates, each 2-time winners, and their varied contributions to humanity. 🔹Marie Curie: physics, chemistry (1903, 1911) 🔹Fred Sanger: chemistry (1958, 1980) 🔹Linus Pauling: chemistry, peace (1954, 1962) 🔹John Bardeen: physics (1956, 1972) 🔹Karl Barry Sharpless: chemistry (2001, 2022) The 5 scholars who won 2 Nobel Prizes — and what sets them apart https://lnkd.in/g_G2-m8R I agree with the author that of these 5 outstanding double winners, Marie Curie is the #GOAT. “ So there isn’t an archetype for double Nobel prize winners. Everyone will have their own view on the greatest among these five. For me, it is hard to argue against Marie Curie, who had to overcome huge obstacles as a female scientist at the beginning of the 20th century. The deck was stacked against her in an extraordinary manner and she blazed a trail for other Nobel winners. Sanger should also be considered among the greatest practical scientists in history, because we’re still reaping the benefits of his successes through the modern genomics revolution. ” Thanks to Dr. Felix Hovsepian who educated me about Marie Curie's many lifelong contributions, plus those of her brilliant husband and children‼️ #WomenInSTEM

Nobel prize 2024 Last night, the Nobel Prizes were presented to the laureates at the Stockholm Concert Hall, followed by the prestigious Nobel Banquet. This annual ceremony, held in Stockholm, welcomes distinguished guests from around the globe, with the King of Sweden personally presenting the awards. In Sweden, a special period known as Nobel Week takes place from December 7th to 15th. It features a variety of events, celebrations, and ceremonies honoring the winners of these esteemed awards. During last night's ceremony, the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Economics were awarded. It is noteworthy that the cash prizes are funded by the capital left by Alfred Nobel and the returns on investments from his estate, ensuring that Swedish taxpayers' money is not involved. An intriguing aspect of the event was the discussion preceding the awards presentation, which highlighted Sweden's economic history and its evolution over the decades. The first recipient to accept an award was Professor John J. Hopfield of Princeton University, a 91-year-old physicist born in Chicago, who earned his PhD in Physics from Cornell University in 1958. This year's Nobel Prizes placed significant emphasis on artificial intelligence and machine learning, themes that were prominently reflected in the selection of the winners in both Chemistry and Physics. You may watch video here. Also you can click to read wikipedia page of Prof. John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton as another winner of physics Nobel prize 2024 https://lnkd.in/dcxUGkhV https://lnkd.in/dNi6_6bH Winners of economic sciences laureates are Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson. The laureates have contributed innovative research about what affects countries’ economic prosperity in the long run. Their insights regarding how institutions influence prosperity show that work to support democracy and inclusive institutions is an important way forward in the promotion of economic development. Fact: The Nobel Prizes, first awarded in 1901, have recognized outstanding achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace, and, since 1968, Economic Sciences. Alfred Nobel’s will established these awards to celebrate those who "have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind." Nobel’s fortune, derived primarily from his invention of dynamite, funded these prestigious prizes. The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in Oslo, is unique in its focus on efforts to foster global harmony, while the others are awarded in Stockholm. Over time, laureates have included figures like Albert Einstein, whose work revolutionized Physics, and Mother Teresa, celebrated for her humanitarian efforts. The Nobel Prizes are deeply respected for their rigorous selection process and have highlighted groundbreaking discoveries such as CRISPR technology, which advanced gene editing. Alfred Nobel’s decision to leave his wealth to these prizes is thought to have been influenced by his desire to leave a positive legacy, contrasting with the destructive potential of his inventions. Fiction: A persistent myth suggests that Alfred Nobel originally intended to create a category for "Best Global Superpower," aimed at recognizing countries that most effectively promoted their cultural, scientific, and military dominance worldwide. According to the tale, Nobel believed that encouraging competition in these areas would lead to a peaceful balance of power globally. The story claims Nobel drafted early criteria for evaluating a nation's superiority, including technological innovation, economic growth, and "impact on lesser-developed nations." However, the idea was allegedly abandoned after a heated argument with his advisors, who feared it would incentivize conflict rather than peace. Some versions of the story even suggest Nobel’s relatives pressured him to drop this controversial category to avoid scandals that might diminish their inheritance. While this tale has circulated in books and media, no historical evidence supports it. Nobel’s will makes no mention of such a category, and his emphasis was clearly on individual contributions to peace and progress, not national rivalries.

Göttingen University and the miracle of 44 Nobel Prizes Last weekend I visited Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and like to share some details how 44 Nobel prize winners are related to it. Most of these Nobel prize winner (Robert Koch; Werner Heiseberg, Gustav Hertz; Max Planck, Max Born, Otto Hahn, etc. ) have been either students or researchers in Göttingen and most of them got their Nobel price in the first half of the 20th Century. What has been the driver for this? Here are some basic answers from my side which I assume can stimulate thinking process and may be further research. More details can be found here in german language (https://lnkd.in/g6RJqM6h) 1. FOCUS + NEW RESOUCRES. It was part of a research policy and strategy to build in Göttingen a focus on mathematics and natural science. Additionally I assume new resources haven been added: 2. HARNACK PRINCIPLE which is for me the most exciting one. It follows the idea to a) build new research centers around a great researcher and b) give him the freedom to decide this research strategy/plan. Mr. Harnack was from 1911 - 1930 the leader of the governmental research organisation "Kaiser Wilhelm Society" which has later be renamed into Max Planck Society. 3. NEW + GREAT TALENTS: e.g. the average age of Professors in Physics dropped from 65 years (1914) to under 40 in the year 1921. This has set the based for breakthroughs in quantum physics those days. So it looks to me that this Nobel price miracle was a result of a great strategy that really worked. On the picture you find the most kissed lady in Göttingen - the GEESE LIESEL. Each PHD student goes after graduation to her with a bouquet of flowers and gives her a kiss. I did this this 25 years ago and still have great memories on this moment.

Did you know that the Nobel Prize was first awarded in 1901, established through the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer, and inventor? Nobel is best known for inventing dynamite, which brought him great wealth. However, after realizing the destructive potential of dynamite, he decided to dedicate much of his fortune to create the Nobel Prizes, recognizing those who work for the betterment of humanity. In his will, Nobel stated that his fortune should fund awards for those who "conferred the greatest benefit to humankind" in five main categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. Later, in 1968, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was added. The Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in the following fields: Physics – for breakthroughs in physical science. Chemistry – for advancements in chemical science. Physiology or Medicine – for discoveries improving medical science. Literature – for outstanding literary achievements. Peace – for efforts promoting peace and conflict resolution. Economic Sciences – for contributions to economics. The awards are granted by various prestigious bodies: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the prizes for Physics, Chemistry, and Economic Sciences. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the prize in Medicine. The Swedish Academy awards the prize for Literature. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the Peace Prize. Nobel's legacy was rooted in ensuring progress and nurturing a better world, shifting focus from destruction to the advancement of humanity. Each laureate receives a medal, a diploma, and a monetary prize as part of this prestigious honor.
