In the Upwards pilot program, there is no-cost childcare for United States Army Reserve service members who reside or train in KS, MO, IA, and IL for drill weekends, battle assemblies, and emergency deployments. Service members outside these pilot states can still sign up, as they may qualify for other programs that offset the cost of care. Upwards provides service members guidance and support in finding suitable childcare solutions, such as part-time, full-time, and drop-in care. Families would be responsible for childcare costs outside drill weekends, battle assemblies, and emergency deployments. Upwards childcare providers are 20-30% more cost-effective, and all support, safety, and deposit placement fees are additionally waived, saving parents approximately $2,500 in fees. This is a must-read report on free childcare in England from the National Audit Office and a great FT piece by Laura Hughes . We all know how vital early years care can be, for children themselves and the country. But parents just can’t know whether they’ll be able to get the extra, free, high-quality care they’ve been promised by government. We are guaranteed, and we get, plenty of government services: access to hospitals, to schooling, defence by the military. Why not childcare too? It’s time parents had absolute certainty their children can get this free care, and that the service will be excellent. It’s vital government works closely with the childcare sector to get this done. I support the #BobWoodruffFoundation because I've witnessed the #hardships #militaryfamilies face, especially their #children. The constant moves and new schools disrupt their lives and #mental #wellbeing. It's not enough for schools to say they support #militaryfamilies - they need to take concrete action. Sometimes, #militaryfamilies have to turn to #privateschools for their children. But it's not always easy to find a spot when you're new to town and haven't had time to establish yourself. And let's be honest, being new to a community doesn't give you an advantage – often, your child gets left out. We need to change this. We all need to do better for our #militaryfamilies, especially their children. Therefore, the key here is to hire staff who understands #militarylife. To partner with organizations like the #BobWoodruffFoundation. Make it easier for #militaryfamilies to access #privateschools. Let's welcome the new month with another myth-busting Friday where we choose #FactsOverFear 💪 ❌ Myth: People seeking asylum have the same access to childcare as everyone else in Australia. ✅ Fact: People seeking asylum are structurally excluded from accessing childcare subsidies that Australian families depend on to afford early childhood education, and ensure parents can balance work and childcare. This is on top of income barriers and living without a safety net. On top of this, children of people seeking asylum have additional development needs due to the trauma they and their parents have experienced. Enrolled childcare gives young children access to vital socialisation, stimulation, and early learning opportunities. It is essential to helping address the development issues faced by the children of people seeking asylum, however without subsidies, most families are unable to access this vital support.

Kim Hiscott, Executive Director of Andrew Fleck Children's Services and OPC Board Member, sat down with Debbie Groff, Child Care Deputy Senior Administrator for the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) in Washington State. In 2021, Washington State became the first state in the US to license outdoor, nature-based childcare programs for preschool and school-age children.
