The Australian Government is investing $55 million in 23 business-research collaborations to develop world-leading innovations. Round 16 Cooperative Research Centre Projects (CRC-P) includes: ➡️ CPC Engineering developing a new process to separate iron ore, aluminium and other metals. ➡️ Roc Technologies designing, manufacturing and deploying foundations for offshore renewable energy. The successful grant recipients include Australian businesses and research organisations working in agriculture, clean technology, infrastructure, health, mining and manufacturing. The projects support partnerships which improve competitiveness, productivity and sustainability of Australian industries. CRC-Ps strengthen links between industry and research organisations, to develop new technologies, products, processes and services. CRC-P grants support industry-led research projects, offering matched funding of between $100,000 and $3 million. Grants are for a period of up to 3 years. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) announced $41.4 million in federal funding for 50 impactful projects across 17 National Laboratories to propel clean energy solutions. The funding is made available through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) Base Annual Appropriations Core Laboratory Infrastructure for Market Readiness (CLIMR) Lab Call. OTT coordinates the TCF and strengthens DOE’s commercialization partnerships. OTT collaborated with fourteen DOE program offices for the FY2024 CLIMR lab call including the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO). 🚀 Innovation Fund is one of the largest funding programs supporting zero and low-carbon emission technologies. 💡 Dedicated to companies that want to lead the energy transition, the Fund finances projects in the following sectors: 🏭 Energy-intensive industries, including carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies and low-carbon products. 💧 Hydrogen - Production of hydrogen components and technologies for its use. 🌍 Carbon capture and geological storage ⚡ Renewable energy 🔋 Energy storage - Technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Commission concluded that the French scheme is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to accelerate the green transition and facilitate the development of certain economic activities, which are of importance for the implementation of the REPowerEU Plan and the Green Deal Industrial Plan. Under the measure, the aid will take the form of direct grants, covering part of the eligible investment costs, EC said, noting that the aid will incentivise the production of energy and fuel from renewable sources, it will not exceed the maximum aid intensity allowed and will be granted no later than December 31, 2025. EC further revealed that the measure will be open to new installations and projects that are significantly accelerated or scaled up, adding that projects will have to be completed and put in operation within 36 months from the granting of the aid.

The challenge is this - Hydropower is very effective especially for large scale projects thereby capital intensive making the development of new projects rare. To increase the impact of this renewable energy technology - important innovation around utility and small scale projects is required for wider reach, a challenge which we are preparing young innovators at Africa Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders (AFYEL) to deal with.
