To combat migrant worker exploitation, the Australian Government implemented the Migration Amendment (Strengthening Employer Compliance) Act 2024 on July 1. Key points include criminal penalties for coercive labor practices, stricter monitoring for right-to-work violations and enhanced compliance measures. The Australian Border Force’s Sponsor Monitoring Units have also conducted an educational campaign for sponsors across the country, raising awareness of sponsorship obligations and informing them of their obligations under the new legislation. These updates are likely to result in increased monitoring and enforcement activities. Check out our blog post from Director Anna Michalska for a discussion surrounding these updates and how employers can navigate the recent changes, and use our checklist to assess compliance risks and ensure monitoring readiness. https://bit.ly/4bz2k95 #Australia #Brisbane #ImmigrationServices #ImmigrationCompliance #Immigration

Migration is a complex issue that requires critical examination to uncover its true impact. Is it a form of rescue aid or a modern manifestation of the slave trade? Despite having qualifications and experience, migrants often face challenges in securing professional positions and end up in menial roles like warehouse work, health care assistance, kitchen portering, cleaning, and waitressing. This situation raises questions about whether migration has inadvertently led to a situation akin to legalized slave labor for African migrants, who receive minimal pay that is further reduced by taxation. #Migration #AfricanMigrants #ProfessionalChallenges
