We have also climbed 🌋 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗲𝘀, navigated ⛵ 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀 and peered into the 🌍 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵'𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 to install our air quality monitoring networks. All trails have had their 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 but walking them has allowed 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗸’𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. Just wrapped up a visit to Barcelona watching the 37th America's Cup - a massive celebration of the sport of sailing and human achievement. Over these days I had the pleasure to meet and discuss innovative projects with several stakeholders in the AC37 Cup Project as well as introducing the mission of BluKap in the Blue Economy. The AC37 is an incredible display of sportsmanship but also the innovations, technology and design that is currently pushing this sport and the marine industry forward. Witnessing the Cup contenders fly pass you (trailed by their foiling chase boats) in speeds exceeding 50 knots at 5x true wind is simply mind-blowing and a true testament to the legacy of the Americas Cup. For a long time renowned for pushing the boundaries of sailing the AC37 is no different - this edition most notably introducing the Youth and Women’s Americas Cup challenge and perhaps most importantly putting sustainability at the heart of the Cup agreement. AC37 Event Ltd CEO Grand Dalton is putting tangible investment into Barcelona’s Blue Economy as well as wider sustainability projects building on the now mandatory requirement for all competing AC37 teams to use zero-emissions hydrogen powered foiling chase boats. Touring the base of the Swedish Youth and Womens challenge with Team co-principal Linnéa Wennergren I witnessed some of these innovations firsthand. Team sponsor Artemis Technologies Ltd is not only backing the Swedish team but also on a mission to lead the decarbonisation of the maritime industry through design and development of transformative technologies and vessels that produce zero emissions in operation. 🔋🌍 A special reason to celebrate this year's Olympics... 🎯 I'm especially looking forward to the 2024 Olympics. You want to know why? Because they come with a very special goal which the organizers in Paris have set themselves: cutting emissions of the event in half, compared to the previous Olympics in London. That means saving up to 2 Million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. 🌊 France is taking ambitious steps to decarbonize its waterways, focusing on the River Seine in Paris, one of Europe's busiest waterways. In preparation for the Olympics, Paris has upgraded its sewage systems and started electrifying boats and ferries. 💡 Instead of banning combustion engines, the French government is subsidizing retrofits for existing vessels. This approach balances sustainability with financial practicality for shipowners. ⚡ And it works. Our Customized Solutions team at Torqeedo has been busy in France, integrating drive systems into yachts and commercial vessels. The results are impressive. Several retrofitted ships with our powerful drive systems will showcase reduced emissions during the Olympics opening parade on the Seine. ✅ I'm very proud of the work our Customized Solutions unit has done with our customers and look forward to seeing the results on the Seine. This is an important development, and I hope that more governments and shipowners see the benefit in retrofitting current ship types with sustainable electric powertrains and follow the example France sets. This summer, we had a brilliant road trip around France visiting friends, ending with a few days in Paris. We were fortunate to attend Day 1 of the Paralympic Athletics at the Stade de France – a fantastic stadium, where we witnessed record-breaking performances (and accompanying bell-ringing to mark their victories!) in both track and field events. What an awesome summer of sport #Paris2024 delivered! Anyway, back to our day... that afternoon - the last day of our holidays - we walked around (wet!) Paris, ending up at the Eiffel Tower by night (thankfully dry by then!). We’d assumed – having not been able to pre-book tickets – we’d be admiring it from below (per the pic!). But to my amazement, there was no ticket queue and we were soon 'launched' almost 300m to the summit (the lift is really speedy!). I was all for it – but as it turned out, fear overwhelmed me and I spent the whole summit time back-flat against the inside walls! I just about managed to do an odd splits / squat-style lurch for a family pic (not shown here – it’s not ‘public worthy’ haha!) – before being relieved to get back to ground level asap! It’s not something I’ve experienced before (and I'm in the scary rides queue with the rest of the family at Chessington, etc...!), but it turns out being 300m in the air, on top of a metal pin-shaped construction is not for me (well, when you put it like that….!). Looking it up though, 6.32m visitors came to the Eiffel Tower in 2023. I feel pretty sure someone else has had a similar experience!? (Those who've been keeping track of my travels will know this is all the more odd... and sickness rather than fear was my 5,000m+ challenge!).   Anyway, back down from dizzying heights – I’m now very much enjoying being back at my desk and getting stuck into new projects. What’s the Goss with Tania? – 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! I've been getting SO excited about all the incredible events and venues throughout the Olympics! One venue that’s caught my eye is the stunning Château de Versailles which is hosting the equestrian events. As many of you know, my daughter loves horses! And the grandeur of what they’re putting together at the Chateau is simply breathtaking and has been mine and the family's one to watch. While I’m all about the equestrian events, I've also been watching and looking forward to catching the rowing and athletics. There's just something about the thrill of these sports that captivates me every time! Did you know there are 329 events at the Olympics this year?! So much going on! Business events are like super events, such as the Olympics, where countless sub-events and components come together to create a grand experience. Just like each Olympic event, every aspect of a business event requires careful planning and execution. Each component, whether it's a keynote presentation, a breakout session, or a networking mixer, needs a clear concept, a detailed plan, a precise run sheet, and a well-thought-out budget—big or small! It's a meticulous orchestration where every detail matters, ensuring the event's success and creating an unforgettable experience for all involved. Just as each Olympic sport captivates us with its unique challenges and triumphs, each element of a business event plays a crucial role in the overall success. Going to sea and even more competing in the most challenging regatta in the world has many analogies with driving a business, even though this is an unfair comparison. In the sense that racing in the Vendée Globe is much more demanding. This is because sailing is the only sport in which you have to drive a vessel from one place to another relying only on your own driving skills and the force of the natural elements. The winner is the one who has worked best on team preparation in the 3 years prior to the start, who better plans the strategy, react to the unexpected, change tactics based on the forecast variations, control the opponent's moves, know the limits of his boat, modulate the speed based on external conditions, manage energy along the route; in the end, the one who makes the fewest mistakes. Like a manager who has to bring his company to a safest harbour. But with the difference that in the Vendée Globe you are alone, in an extreme environment, you sleep little and often in the cold and you cannot count on anyone's help. Fair winds to Giancarlo Pedote and all 40 sailors who left for this extreme and beautiful adventure.
