It's been a big couple of days. You may have seen that #nursing and #midwifery peak groups are coming together to support health system reform. There are plenty of Alliances in health (I've been involved with, and founded, a few). What's distinctive about this one is that it's built on trust at the President/CEO level of each organisation. No secretariats, no MoUs, no membership fee...just trust. And it works so much differently and is so much more powerful because of this. 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is reviewing the possibility of reducing the practice learning hours required for student nurses and midwives. This follows an extensive review conducted by the Nuffield Trust, which will be published soon. Currently, students must complete 2,300 hours of practice learning, with 600 hours allowed through simulated practice. Sam Foster, NMC’s Executive Nurse Director, emphasised that the council is open to reducing these hours but remains focused on ensuring the quality of clinical placements. The goal is to achieve the necessary educational outcomes, even if the number of hours decreases. This review aligns with the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, which supports reducing practice hours to ease student pressures and increase placement capacity across the NHS.
