Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have the potential to revolutionise South Africa’s energy landscape by addressing load shedding, optimising energy use, and enhancing renewable energy integration. By storing inexpensive, off-peak power and selling it during peak times, BESS enables energy arbitrage—an essential strategy for economic efficiency and a cleaner, more stable energy grid. Arbitrage involves buying electricity at lower prices and selling it when prices are higher, thus capitalising on price fluctuations for financial and grid stability benefits. This method not only generates revenue for operators but also supports grid balance by storing excess renewable energy during periods of low demand and discharging it when demand is high. It helps reduce reliance on peaking power plants, smooth out price volatility, and lower carbon emissions by displacing fossil fuels. Understanding the benefits of arbitrage for individual businesses and regions, and refining regulations, will be crucial for optimising BESS performance and supporting the transition to a low-carbon energy system. #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #BESS #EnergyArbitrage Read more… https://lnkd.in/dUqZmAY7

24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) matching is a transformative approach to energy procurement 🕓 ⚡ The United Nations's 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact defines it as meeting every kilowatt-hour of a company’s electricity consumption with carbon-free electricity sources, every hour of every day, everywhere. In other words, 24/7 CFE, or hourly matching, is the end state of a fully decarbonised electricity system. But what are the key players within the growing ecosystem of #247CFE? What practical steps buyers and suppliers can undertake to achieve hourly matching? We have addressed these questions in a new study with EY (available here https://lnkd.in/dxCcCDZB), learn more about it in this article 👇 https://lnkd.in/eAMWzWFa

The UK government's proposal to introduce zonal pricing in the energy market, where consumers pay based on their proximity to energy projects, has sparked concern that such changes could harm the UK's industrial sector and deter investments in low-carbon energy. The proposal aims to make the energy system more efficient by reducing the need for costly transmission lines, potentially lowering overall bills. However, it could lead to higher costs for factories and energy-intensive industries located far from power sources, and decrease earnings for remote renewable energy projects like wind and solar farms. Critics argue that zonal pricing could create volatility, increase capital costs for clean energy developers, and ultimately undermine investment in renewable energy. Proponents argue that it has successfully reduced costs and attracted renewable energy investments in other countries. The UK government is reviewing responses to the consultation and emphasizes that any reforms will focus on protecting consumers and encouraging investment. The outcome will play a crucial role in the UK's strategy for sustainable growth and reaching net-zero targets.

As electricity costs rise and grid stability becomes more challenging, businesses and municipalities are turning to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as a smart solution. Energy arbitrage—storing electricity during low-cost, off-peak hours and using or selling it during high-cost peak periods—is a powerful strategy. Businesses can better manage energy expenses and improve grid reliability by focusing on costs, battery life, and time-of-use tariffs. With the right approach, BESS offers strong savings and a solid return on investment, making it a vital tool in South Africa’s evolving energy landscape. SustainPower - Sustainable Power Generation (Pty) Ltd offers tailored BESS solutions to help you maximise your investment. 1moSo grateful for the opportunity to work on this great piece of work. I love the way we use the outlook for electricity prices to think about how electrification is an opportunity to reduce household energy costs - provided there is timely and efficient investment in critical infrastructure, effective uptake of CER, and we address the household barriers to electrification. A huge shout out to Howard Zhang, Dan Condon, Tom Miller, Max Bonic, William Degotardi, Hazel Li and Neil Lessem for their help on the project!
