It was a joy to be a featured speaker at this year's CyberCon! In my presentation, I outlined a variety of helpful tips to help you plan better. I drew on my experiences in emergency management and in writing Victoria's cyber security incident and emergency plans to guide the conversation. For those who weren't in the room, here's the cheat sheet: - Broaden your team. It takes a village to plan well. - Start talking and keep talking. That is the essence of planning. - Learn from the past. We can't change the past, but your past experiences can help make the future ones less painful. - Learn from the future. Imagine a future scenario, and exercise your arrangements against it. And remember: - Reach for your plan during an incident or emergency. It's all wasted effort otherwise (and likely a sign you've not planned well) - Remember your "why". Knowing your big picture motivation will help you get through the dark moments of a response. It takes a village to plan, and it also takes a village to make such a presentation a success. My great thanks to Spencer Mitten, Courtney C. and Dovid Clarke for championing the cause!

National security isn't just a government issue anymore—it's everyone’s responsibility. The threats we face today come from all directions, both online and offline. By empowering local communities and building strong partnerships between public and private sectors, we can create a defense that’s smarter and more resilient. 

Threats like this are often framed as existential, rather than direct. It's easy to discuss threats like the ones that drive federal policy in this way as simply a set of capabilities in threat actors' toolkits. However, these really are direct and immediate risks and those capabilities are being leveraged in all directions, not just specifc, narrow sectors... at the expense of individuals and businesses worldwide. https://lnkd.in/eKf5SYBZ

The Texas water facility breach signifies an elevation in cyber threats tied to state-actors. The potential disruption of essential public utilities could have devastating regional impacts, especially in drought-stricken areas. 2. The incident highlights the need for improved cybersecurity infrastructure and collaborative efforts between DHS and local, state, and international partners. Enhanced authority for DHS could be necessary. 3. Following repeated cyberattacks on water facilities, a focus on safeguarding these critical resources could emerge as a political issue in upcoming Senate races, evidenced by the involvement of two congressional candidates in the current investigation.
