“Contextualising knowledge takes time and tremendous effort;” writes Peeraya Suphasidh, “requiring that all stakeholders understand the construction methods. This project points to the fact that there are many traditional methods and materials for heat mitigation in the face of the climate crisis. How these materials and techniques might be implemented where most needed remains an immense challenge.” Read the article by Peeraya Suphasidh here: https://aus.archi/l9c1 From Architecture Bulletin | Technology: AI and Architecture | 2025. Architectural innovation isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about resilience. With earthquake-prone regions on the rise, knowing how buildings behave during seismic events is critical for architects, especially at the conceptual design stage. Incorporating seismic considerations early enhances both safety and sustainability. By integrating seismic principles into design from the outset, architects not only ensure compliance but also future-proof their projects for safety and longevity. Resilient architecture is the future! #Architecture #SeismicDesign #EarthquakeResilience #BuildingSafety #StructuralEngineering #ProjectManagement This assessment was done in collaboration with ahlad kumar, Meyyammai Ramanathan, Nishchal Pujari, ADITYA KUMAR

From my experience, every design stage comes with its own unique challenges, which requires architectural intelligence or expertise. Let me draw from two examples: 1. The initial design stage may come with its own limitations, where an architect will have to create a design fabric that tailors the clients brief and requirements, site topography & features, planning regulations into a single piece. However, each of these might also come with its own issues, for instance, balancing ‘clients requirements with cost and resources available’; ‘conserving some site features to work with building’; ‘designing in accordance to planning regulations and design/ building codes’. So it is important to do some architectural basics in this stage; site analysis, critically evaluating clients brief, using conceptual design such as sketches & bubble diagrams, looking at design codes and planning regulations and of course, talking to professionals with the built environment. Asides that, you might want to take into consideration the principles of design. ‘SOAPEES’ the acronym for Space, Order, Arrangement, Propriety, Economy, Eurythmy & Sustainability. This is where architectural intelligence comes into play. 2. The construction/ working drawings design stage needs some proper level of detailing, material and building specifications which requires an in-depth architectural knowledge and expertise. However, I think the underlying issue in this stage is creating a detailed design for smooth transition into engineering. In some cases, Architects and Engineers are strongly opinionated on what can work, and what cannot work on site. So it is very significant to interpret drawings in a way that is clear and specific for implementation. In school of architecture, we were taught that according to Walter Gropius, ‘Architecture begins where engineering ends’, an opinion I strongly have my reservations about in professional practice, as I feel Architecture should work with Engineering to deliver an awesome project; and that relationship should be reflected in the construction/ working drawings design stage. In addition, let me also tease that asides requiring architectural intellect in design stages, Design itself is a ‘wicked problem’- taking you back to the first two lines of this post…. You can do some findings on what this is. Hopefully you found some insights Abdullahi Alade

Ephemeral architectures are temporary structures that invigorate urban spaces and inspire architectural creativity. These installations engage communities by transforming environments and challenging traditional architectural norms. They allow architects to experiment with new materials and ideas without the constraints of permanence, fostering innovation. Public interaction with these structures enhances understanding and appreciation of architecture. Ultimately, ephemeral architectures bridge the gap between professional practice and public experience, making architecture more accessible and relevant. #architecture #innovation #construction #realestate #aensemble

“Buildings have been reused throughout history. The current discourse of diverse trends in preservation together with awareness for sustainable environments has led to a surge in adaptive reuse projects. The combination of new and old architecture ensures the retaining of authentic character while providing an appropriate new use and revitalizing the structure. Learning from precedents is one of the most important knowledge bases for architects. It has many layers of knowledge referring to the old building and its original use, the transformed building and its new use, and the transformation itself.” Citation: Fisher-Gewirtzman D (2016) Adaptive Reuse Architecture Documentation and Analysis.
