Is the future of physiotherapy more inclusive? Observing current physiotherapy students' attitudes, beliefs and learning preferences, Dr Megan Ross MACP and Calum Neish from The University of Queensland examined thoughts surrounding care and education regarding LGBTQIA+ community members, in this month's Journal of Physiotherapy. This study highlights the need to improve the current curriculum and incorporate more inclusive education, as many students resort to cis/heteronormative ideas without utilising a critical lens. A Compassionate Pedagogy. Indeed. Can deep, meaningful learning happen without it? Learning that will hugely enhance student outcomes? But one cannot pour much from a cup that's almost empty, and this is why #CaringOnCampus offers opportunities to recharge, renew and reconnect with educators' own strong, abiding centre within themselves. If you are an educator within an HEI, I urge you to take time to read and to reflect on this recent blog. I'm sure you will agree with everything that is written, however, it may raise some 'buts'. Such as issues concerning time, confidence, or even training needs regarding compassionate communication skills. BUT where there is the will to do something, ways will always emerge, so please DM if this is the case. #compassion #caring #HE #EDI
In this blog, Dr Clare Killingback, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy and a Fellow for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at the University of Hull, discusses compassionate pedagogy: https://lnkd.in/emr-DedV

Today I presented two of my three posters at #AACPDM2024. Here are the highlights: Poster 1 (in blue) An 8-week practitioner-led sports group (Sports Stars) improves participation in sport for ambulant, school aged children with CP, which is sustained 3 YEARS post intervention. Parents attributed this exceptional result to changes to children's confidence, autonomy and motivation. Poster 2 (in orange) Standardised participation assessments do not adequately measure attendance or involvement in sport. This is primarily because they include very small proportions of physical activities. So what next? 1) We are looking for partners outside of Australia or Brazil who are interested in adapting a culturally relevant Sports Stars program. 2) We are developing an assessment of attendance and involvement in sport and physical recreation - to do this we need to understand the nuanced, personal experiences of children, adolescents and young people when they participate in physical activities. Stay in touch to be involved in this background work, or to be involved in outcome measure validation!

🌿 Illuminating Growth in Physiotherapy Education 🌞 As I captured this serene moment of sunlight piercing through the lush canopy, it struck me how much it mirrors our journey in physiotherapy education. Just like these rays breaking through the dense leaves, knowledge in physiotherapy illuminates the complexities of human movement and healing. Each beam of light, much like every piece of knowledge gained, highlights paths to recovery that were once shadowed. In the spirit of lifelong learning, let’s continue to seek out the light of new knowledge, to penetrate deeper into the unknowns of human health. Let us be the light that guides our patients towards a brighter, healthier future. #PhysiotherapyEducation #LifelongLearning #HealthcareInnovation #MovementIsMedicine

🥱 Is your subject accused of being "dry and boring"? Over the last few weeks I've enjoyed collaborating with Dr Peter William Stubbs to share this blog on student feedback. It touches on so many important things in learning and teaching, from the importance of listening (properly, and iteratively) to feedback, to acknowledging that your own passion for a subject is not always shared by students - especially when it's difficult (and involves stats!). Peter also notes the importance of connecting learning to the futures students are imagining for themselves - in this case, a practice-focussed, clinical setting. Here's to building the next generations of evidence-formed, research-hungry health professionals! Jenny Wallace UTS Faculty of Health https://lnkd.in/g2hwgumD

Imagine a school where medical students, residents, nurses, and attending physicians can learn deeper models of human #anatomy and understand the principles and practices of healing, going beyond the current understanding of integrative medicine, yet making it accessible to all in a shorter time. Imagine a school where #wellness professionals can learn the science of medicine, the strengths and limitations of the medical model, and the deeper philosophy and practice of #healing that connects all systems. Now imagine that they are the same school. What will follow is a shift from the current state of healthcare and wellness to a focus on healing together from the individual to the planetary scale. This will be the transition to the future health and healing system of the world based in and sustained by our natural intelligence. Yeah, we can do that.
