Hardly shocking, but goes to show nothing is immune to inflation. What’s really interesting to me are these forecasts. Not to say there isn’t a strong business case for the Green Line. Especially as our population balloons. But forecasts are a garbage-in-garbage out exercise. And it would be fascinating to learn how numbers like these are derived. “The city-shaping benefits from building the core of Phase 1 remain strong. In addition to ridership numbers, the revised Phase 1 of Green Line will connect Calgarians to 162,000 jobs within walking distance of stations, remove 15,000 tonnes of GHG emissions annually and unlock a maximum potential of 70,000 housing units through strategic transit-oriented development along the alignment.” #business #financing #alberta
Calgary City Council has approved a revised Phase 1 project and capital request to address rising costs. The Green Line LRT is moving forward and on track to begin main construction from Lynnwood/Millican in the southeast to Eau Claire by the end of 2024. Read the release here: https://lnkd.in/gKthwjwa.

𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑆𝑀𝐸𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑛𝑜 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑟𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠? As a Decarbonisation Adviser with experience offering specialist consultancy services on large-scale infrastructure projects, these are the questions currently on my mind. I attended the Constructing Excellence in Wales North Wales Construction Summit today and I've left motivated to share my thoughts: 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑢𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑊𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑔𝑜𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒: 𝑂𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑆𝑀𝐸𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑑𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑓𝑒𝑙𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟. I’ve highlighted collaboration within the public sector and focussed on procurement off the back of the following points raised today. 𝑪𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒕 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒌𝒆𝒚 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔: • We should promote the opportunities which decarbonisation targets present to us in Wales; • Procurement processes can drive the achievement of net zero within the sector; 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉-𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒆: • Part of the solution is to accept joint responsibility; • We should address environmental impacts at the beginning (early intervention); and • Standardisation of social value reporting in public sector contracts is required. I think a special shout out should go towards Uchelgais Gogledd Cymru | Ambition North Wales for all the work being carried out as part of the North Wales Growth Deal. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from Alwen Williams today!

SA Water has partnered with three specialist #pipeline companies for the delivery of its landmark $3.3 billion capital program. The three companies will share in up to $700 million worth of work over the next four years, including laying #trunk #water and #sewer #pipes that will enable new houses to be built. The #capital #program includes an unprecedented $1.5 billion investment, announced as a key initiative of the South Australian Premier’s #Housing #Roadmap, to increase capacity of the #water and #sewer #network through upgrades to #pipes, #pump #stations and #tanks to unlock a potential 40,000 new allotments across the state. Infrastructure projects will primarily target Adelaide’s northern growth front, including areas such as Angle Vale, Riverlea and Roseworthy to maximise the number of new houses enabled through this investment. https://lnkd.in/gzTRsN8C

Lower Thames Crossing planning decision delayed until May 2025. The Government has delayed its decision on whether to award development consent for the £9bn Lower Thames Crossing project, fuelling concerns over its future. The decision was originally expected in June but was put back when the General Election was called. Under a revised programme, incoming Transport Secretary Louise Haigh was due to make a decision by 4 October. Haigh said the deadline was now to be further extended to 23 May 2025 in order to allow “more time for the application to be considered further, including any decisions made as part of the spending review”. The new road, totalling 23km with twin tunnels under the Thames, would connect to the A2 and M2 in Kent and the A13 and junction 29 of the M25 on the north side of the Thames. The project has been promoted as crucial for reducing congestion at the Dartford Crossing and supporting the government’s infrastructure and housing growth missions. It is also seen as an important test bed for innovative approaches to low-carbon design and construction. Environmental groups have raised significant opposition, citing various concerns about its ecological and environmental impact. And while the project will alleviate congestion at the Dartford Crossing, in the long-term, critics argue, it will increase overall traffic in the region and further foster car dependency. A joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Murphy is earmarked to deliver the main 4.2km long tunnel section for the massive Lower Thames Crossing project...
