Thanks Srinivas Rao! I enjoyed this session with you as well and was pleased to see your commitment to psychotherapy as a critical component of #psychedelictherapy. And not just for #PTSD. I had feared that you would focus more on how the compounds themselves do the heavy lifting. As we approach ##FDA approval and legalization the necessity of trained, #credentialed and #licensed #clinicians and engagement in #psychotherapeutic work to translate #insights into action is critical, and hopefully non-negotiable for people seeking psychedelic therapy for #mentalhealth #diagnoses. So many colleagues, and particularly #physicians, like to talk about #mechanismofaction, #serotoninreceptors, and #neuroplasticity, and can give the impression that facilitation is critical for #safety reasons rather than #therapeutic ones or that psychotherapy before and after psychedelic #medication sessions are optional. As for #digitalplatforms - I have my reservations - but if it means giving people access who might not have access, it should be critically explored. At #burningman we often say “safety third.” But we can avoid to adopt this mantra when it comes to psychedelic therapy in mental health conditions. #veterans

New publication! I am happy to share this article published in Dialogues in Health titled “The impact of education level and socioeconomic status on the association between depressive symptoms and memory in an older population in Latin America: An exploratory analysis from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-BRAZIL)”. I had the pleasure of working as the first author in collaboration with talented and special friends from PPCR Course Wilson Fandino, Blanca Bazan-Perkins, Thiago Monaco, Nadine Aranis, Bassel Almarie, Julia Mineto, Aisha Aladab, Kevin Pacheco-Barrios MD, MSc, MPH and Felipe Fregni! For this project, we presented a model investigating the relationship between depressive symptoms and memory in elderly patients from the ELSI Brazilian cohort. Educational level was an important confounder, and socioeconomic status was identified as an effect modifier in the relationship. Europeans are living longer than ever before, tangible proof of the phenomenal advancements in science and healthcare. However, it comes with a paradoxical rise in nervous system disorders – one in three of us set to face this challenge in our lifetime. Europe’s rapidly ageing population and ballooning numbers threaten the sustainability of our healthcare systems due to increasing and more complex demand for care. The scale of this challenge demands urgent prioritisation by clinicians, governments, policymakers, and patient advocates across Europe. Understanding these nervous system disorders is like untangling a giant knot.
