In Singapore, CNA released their Big Read of the week titled "Fuelled partly by youths' anxiety, the internship rat race has unintended effects" They found one particular driven student who did 10(!) internships before graduating. As a previous founder looking for young talent, I've been really impressed by the drive and responsibility of the interns we've hired. This has created an environment where hacks like me can get help to stand up a proper MVP with in-market talent without relying on overseas studios or playing Fiverr/Upwork roulette. Some of the young talented people I've worked with have: 🚗 Went from being a guy who punched support tickets for Uber drivers in Perth to re-engineering and implementing the driver dispatch system in Sao Paulo 🛒 Built their own insurance product marketplace comparing policies between different providers because he wanted to buy insurance for himself and found it so painful to research each company separately 👗 Planned a fashion shoot: scouted locations, sourced models and did the camera work herself and then created multiple pieces of content for a month-long social media campaign. The article looks at the toll on mental health, as well as the usual horror stories of doing jobs that interns are not prepared for, or being used as a glorified errand runner. But what it misses is that because Singapore is increasingly becoming a place where good companies get started (whether they continue here is another post), young ambitious people can build up portfolios akin to someone with 1-2 YOE. (By the way if you're an intern - never work for free, because if you don't value yourself, the company are less likely to value you. Especially if you're an aspiring software engineer, data scientist etc. the IMDA supports SG-based companies with a $1,000/month stipend to provide internship opportunities) This is not a post to say 'university education is dead' - you still learn about proper life there, like juggling competing priorities (mine was attending a lecture on Ordinary Differential Equations vs. attending pub trivia) or carrying useless project team mates. But what I look for, and many of my fellow founders also, is 'can you do the job'. If you have something tangible to point to, then the opportunities are boundless. Article in the comments ⬇

I did my first internship in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and never looked back. If I had to start all over again, I would do the same. The potential benefits of going abroad would outweigh the reasons for staying in the country you were born. This is what I found in Switzerland 🇨🇭 that I could only dream of in Italy 🇮🇹 :  ✅ Working at cutting-edge R&D. ➡ I worked on high-impact projects. Many companies in Italy would have handed me out some Excel sheets to clean for a low budget project. That’s not what I studied for. ✅ You have the chance to make breakthroughs and propose your ideas. ➡ Whenever I truly believed something was worth doing, I could propose it during the meetings and then discuss it with the technical director. Everyone had their opinion, but they were all willing to listen carefully. ✅ Freedom means honors but also responsibilities. ➡ Another intern was working 66 hours a week! His role was very close to day-to-day operations. He told me “I like doing this, but sometimes it’s getting out of hand”. ✅ Learn from international people who are also immigrants. ➡ Currently, in Switzerland, 26% of the population is made up of immigrants. If you went through the process of competing with international candidates, it means you have been selected among many. You exited your comfort zone. This implies many sacrifices but also a rewarding experience. ✅ Earning 2x than a full-time job in Italy. ➡ With internship salaries, you earn more than corresponding full-time jobs in Italy. This allows anyone to become independent early. Take chances. Take risks. And when it works, double down. #research #careers

I'm excited to share some insights from my recent analysis of living costs across various cities and countries, conducted during my internship with Mentorness. To ensure accuracy, I filled missing values with column means, corrected city name spellings, and grouped data into categories like Transport, Housing, and Education using DAX. The results are intriguing: Singapore, Monaco, and Hong Kong have the highest living costs, while Mauritania, Togo, and Sierra Leone are the most affordable. In specific categories, transportation costs are highest in Singapore and lowest in the Solomon Islands, housing costs peak in Monaco and are lowest in Tuvalu, and education is most expensive in Singapore and cheapest in Gambia. Income varies significantly, with Liechtenstein having the highest average and Mali the lowest. Regionally, North America and the Caribbean have the highest costs of living, while Africa and South America are the most affordable. These insights can help individuals with relocation decisions, financial planning, and businesses with setting salaries and expansion strategies. 🌍 Exploring Big Tech as a Japanese Student Abroad: My Key Takeaways from Y&Y Journey Internship Panel Discussion Event 🚀 As a Japanese student at Sauder School of Business exploring internship opportunities, I found myself overwhelmed by the vast landscape of big tech, especially when considering the options working in Vancouver and Tokyo. I was unsure about the full spectrum of marketing functions, or business in general. In October, I had the privilege of attending the Y&Y Journey event, where I listened to a panel of experts from Apple, Microsoft, and Adobe. Led by Yui Mikuriya and Yuka, this event was an eye-opener and completely transformed my perspective on pursuing a career in business in these prestigious firms. It challenged many of my assumptions, from part-time to full-time transitions to corporate culture in big tech. Here are my three key takeaways: 1. Cultural Curiosity A guest working in Channel Marketing at Adobe shared how she polished her business-Japanese while studying in an English-speaking environment. Her commitment to resources like YouTube, the Japan Career Network, and networking through coffee chats demonstrated her dedication. This taught me that cultural curiosity is essential—being open to learning and adapting, even if it feels foreign, is key to success in any industry. 2. Resilience Aoi Hattori shared her journey of rejection from Apple and how she didn’t let it define her. Instead, she improved her skills, gained B2B experience, and continued applying until she landed the internship. Her story reminded me that rejection isn’t the end—it’s a redirection. The ability to learn from setbacks and persist with a positive outlook is essential to achieving career goals. 3. Balance A guest from Microsoft discussed how, despite the non-technical nature of his role in marketing, there are still clear quantitative objectives that align with broader company goals. This insight helped me understand how business in big tech isn’t one-dimensional—it involves balancing creative strategy with data-driven decision-making, something that’s strongly supported by my studies in quantitative decision-making, managerial economics, and financial accounting at Sauder. I highly recommend following Y&Y Journey if you’re a Japanese student studying abroad. There’s no better way to gain firsthand insights into corporate culture, the application process, and the mindset needed to succeed at Japanese companies, especially in global tech firms.
