AustralianSuper's London office is about to get a little more crowded with the fund hiring a slew of new international equities talent from the likes of AXA Investment Managers, Mirabaud Group and Barings and preparing to deploy more than 70 per cent of new inflows offshore. “These high calibre appointments are a springboard to further growing our global equities platform, as we continue to expand our overall international investment capability,” said AustralianSuper head of international equities Mark Hargraves.

Technology-focused private equity group Silver Lake has raised its largest fund to date as it brings its focus back to the large takeovers and puts the brakes on smaller-sized bets with them believed to have backfired in the past years. The private equity group have just raised $20.5bn for its seventh private equity fund. This surpassed the $20bn it raised for a fund in 2021 and defies the trend of diminishing fund sizes among major private capital firms, as pension funds reduce their investment in unlisted assets. In late 2022, the valuation of technology began to fall and this meant that co-chief executives Egon Durban and Greg Mondre knew it would be the best time to pursue large takeovers. This led to deals been agreed with private US software group Qualtrics, German technology pioneer Software AG and Endeavor, the average equity investment totalling $3.5bn across several deals. Silver Lake’s shift in approach coincides with a surge in activity, marked by significant returns to investors through successful large buyouts, including the takeovers of VMware and Dell Technologies. This has positioned Silver Lake as one of the most engaged investors in private equity. When speaking about the repositioning of the firm’s portfolio, Mondre said: “We are at our best when we are investing at scale. The returns are substantially higher when the bets are bigger.” Durban added: “In 2021 we made a number of subscale, passive, minority growth investments. We were very active. Terry Charalambous , Head of Private Equity at AustralianSuper, announced plans to roughly double the fund's private equity portfolio over the next three years. The allocation is set to increase from approximately A$17 billion to over A$30 billion. This strategy involves partnering with top private equity managers globally, focusing on co-investments and co-underwrites to enhance exposure to high-quality investments.
