Next up Financial Times #futureofthecar2024 is a discussion on rising protectionism in automotive facilitated by Imogen Bhogal joined by Ian Howells Abby Seadler Wulf and Jean André Barbosa. Time to view how cars can play a role in as part of an evolving mobility ecosystem rather than just being seen as a problem. We need regulation that takes account of what cities and rural areas need from mobility to help create a framework that meets the needs for all users. Experience in France and Japan shows that with good vehicle choice, incentives and regulatory frameworks there is demand for smaller #ev models. The current regulations in the EU make it difficult to profitably produce them for that market. Consumer choice alone would likely mean Chinese OEMs benefit due to the availability of resources and low cost base however there are socioeconomic reasons why it shouldn’t be left to consumer demand alone. OEMs are having to think longer term and in more depth about how, when and where they source the various elements of their supply chain. Calling an end to globalisation is not the answer as it brings advantages but will require modification. The semiconductor shortage highlighted how a narrow supply chain can have a detrimental impact so diversification of supply chain benefits everyone. Western OEMs are not afraid of competition as long as it’s on a level playing field and currently they aren’t sure that’s the case.
