The deafening noise of 9-year-old girl scouts Leadership edition… I recently survived a dozen 9-year-old girl scouts at a cookie meeting. The noise level was off the charts and definitely made me want to reach for some bourbon instead of a "Tagalong!" But it got me thinking... isn't it just like navigating a mountain of requests at work? Track with me for a second: • 𝐍𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐬. 𝐈𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐱 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰: Just like those little chatterboxes discussing cookie strategies at a volume that can be heard across the tri-state area, work emails flood in faster than you can say "Thin Mints" and you just have to take requests one at a time - chipping away knowing more requests/emails will come. • 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬: Managing a troop of cookie enthusiasts isn't too different from leading a team at work. It's all about delegation, motivation, and occasionally bribing them with extra sprinkles to get things done. • 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: Despite the chaos, there's nothing sweeter than seeing those proud faces after a successful cookie sale. Similarly, conquering that mountain of tasks at work leads to a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. A big shout out to Ann Miller and Joy (Turnes) Wilson who lead the troop (I was only pitch-hitting that day – I don’t know how they do it!) So, whether you're wrangling scouts or wrangling spreadsheets, remember to embrace the chaos, find your inner scout leader, and savor the sweet taste of victory (or maybe just a well-deserved snack break). Wisdom from the founder/chair of AriZona Beverage Co., "I'm focused on things like if my wife, my mother, my sister worked here, what would I want them to have? Maybe that's an old-fashioned Brooklyn thing, but to me, that's what makes business work." Bravo, sir! We couldn’t agree more. When we started MotivationCheck, we included in our core values something I had said when resigning a corporate position years earlier. Specifically, we stated that our company should be the type of place our 8 YO selves would want to work someday, let alone the type of place we’d want our own children and family members to work. All partners agreed. We Greeks use the word “estima” quite a bit (in fact, I wanted to name a company that desperately). It’s a nuanced word, but in essence it means to do the “right” thing, the esteemed / respected / admirable / ethical thing. Leaders, how can you insert estima into your workplace? If the 8 YO version of yourself was standing in the doorway and observing you at work, would he/she want to grow up to be you today? If yes, bravo! Keep shining and share your light! If not, how can you correct that situation? For me, it was acknowledging what I couldn’t change and redirecting somewhere I could make the impact I desired, with our training company. Embracing the Hard Stuff: Lessons from Alix Mulholland CEO of FieldDay Ireland Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a female networking event hosted by A&L Goodbody LLP, with the incredible Alix Mulholland CEO of Field Day Candles, at my all time fav hotel room2 hometels | B Corp™ I’m personally a huge fan of their Folks Collection—it beautifully captures the essence of gathering and celebrates the heritage of our land. 🌿✨ But what resonated even more was Alix’s refreshing honesty about the real challenges behind the scenes: 🕯️ Candles that didn’t sell. 💼 Packaging ideas that missed the mark. 🤔 Hiring the wrong people, not trusting gut instincts... We often shy away from discussing the hard stuff, but Alix leaned right into it. It’s clear that challenge is not the enemy—it’s the forge where resilience, creativity, and business instincts are sharpened. Smooth rides don’t teach us much. The tough moments? That’s where growth happens. I bought flowers yesterday - for myself. While my family gets to enjoy them, they were truly for me. That sounds so simple and sweet, but there is a deeper meaning here. I made a huge wager in early May. It was so freakin’ risky and I cannot begin to tell you the amount of pressure and the weight of stress I’ve self-inflicted since then. I chose to bet on myself. I left the 8-6 grind (let’s be real - those are common availability hours these days…) and any sense of steady financial comfort for a while. I had a set amount of months I could go self-funded before looking for or landing a new FT job. I started On Deck Leadership Consulting, asked for introductions, networked with the right people, and landed some stellar short and long-term engagements. It’s only been 75 or so days, and the fact that I can keep hustling and bringing in partnerships that match On Deck’s vision and mission is both humbling and full of pressure - I don’t want to let anyone down! Yet - pressure is a privilege. I am not going to B*S you and tell you I didn’t or do not cry, stay up at night, have anxiety, worry, stress the f out, etc. Every darn day! In fact, I didn’t buy flowers for my home since I made this change - which is extremely abnormal for me. Flowers make me a happy gal.  I am a fighter and a hustler. Feeling this amount of pressure means I am working on the right things. I humbly accept the privilege that comes with the pressure of impacting change. I am excited to announce a few of the long-term partnerships I am working on soon, but for now - let’s share these “You did it, Meg!” flowers together. I have a secret. 76 sold-out events back to back to back four years straight. Why? How. It’s not us. It’s THEM! There are many “sales training” companies—good ones, in fact—but none I've seen have achieved even a quarter of that level. Most can have maybe one or two good events yearly. Our secret is this. We don’t have clients, we don’t have a team, we don't have a company. We have A FAMILY, we have AN ARMY!!! We don’t just do business with people. We DO LIFE TOGETHER!! When they go back out into the world, they aren’t just changing a few (word tracks), they are creating a bigger, better identity. They are becoming better fathers, mothers, leaders, friends, teammates, and more. Sales training is essential. But when you combine it with life training like we have, you create total badasses. Impactors!!! We didn’t want to build a company like everyone else. We wanted to create a hero-making machine. We wanted to build a close group of people on a mission to be great and raise the standards in our companies and our communities. People told us, “That’s stupid,” stick to the sales training. We stuck to our calling. And our calling is to build-inspire-motivate (whatever you want to call it) multi-dimensional badass leaders, and the results say the 🌎 is thirsting for it. Be the example. I learned so much those two years that could be applied both personally and professionally. ➡ When the right framework and guardrails are there, the rest is open for fun and innovation. Sailing: With a reliable weather forecast, you can choose the right group of islands to safely explore. Work: When you have the right strategic plan in place, the innovative tactics to get there can be endless. ➡ Resourcefulness is a very important competency. Sailing: If your boat breaks down in the middle of nowhere, you can't just have Amazon send you a part. Work: When you have an unexpected business challenge, you have to work with the resources you have to adjust and succeed. ➡ Be in the moment. Sailing: Take mental pictures of the moments that matter along the journey, no matter what the destination. Work: take time to celebrate the small wins along the way with your team, not just the final output.
