🔬Breaking Down Barriers to Auckland University of Technology Research and Expertise🔬 They say, "knowledge is power," but its true value comes from sharing it effectively. When Ed Maunder, Head of Postgraduate for the School of Sport & Recreation, was approached by an overseas law firm for technical advice, he was eager to help but concerned about managing the paperwork and personal liability. Fortunately, Ed was encouraged to consult with Thomas Davidson, the Contracts Manager at AUT Ventures. "From the moment I reached out to Tom, it was clear that consulting through AUT Ventures was simple," Ed explains. "Tom handled everything—negotiating fees, finalising contracts, and managing invoices. Tom's support allowed me to focus on the project, confident that I had backup." AUT Ventures offers streamlined services that encourage staff like Ed to share their expertise beyond the university while taking care of any tax and liability issues. This enhances their academic experience and supports Ed’s belief that "engaging with industry makes for a better academic." AUT's updated External Research and Consulting Contracts Policy & Procedures reaffirm AUT’s commitment to staff sharing their expertise with businesses, government and non-profits. Catherine Redmond, the Director of the University Research Office is keen to clarify why the update is so significant, “[the Policy] is designed to facilitate externally funded research and consulting arrangements. This kind of funding enables AUT to carry out more ambitious, resource-intensive projects, empowering our researchers to advance knowledge and innovation and make a real difference in society." Each year AUT Ventures manages over $1 million in external consulting work and undertakes more than 80 consulting projects delivered by AUT staff to more than 50 organisations globally. This Policy empowers AUT staff to engage with industry, utilising their research and expertise to secure external funding and enhance both their own and the University's reputation and rankings. Mark Orams, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research is a champion for AUT research, “The AUT story is filled with examples of our people impacting the real world through sharing our knowledge, whether that be through research projects or consulting with industry. We are committed to continue building on our foundation of transformation by empowering our academic community to embrace opportunities to be disruptors and trailblazers. By raising awareness of what’s possible through [the Policy], I hope to see even more impact being made by AUT discoveries and disclosures.” #AUTuni #sharingknowledge #research #expertise #consulting #funding #findanexpert #technicaladvice #curiosityapplied #autventures

If you're a Swedish founder looking to apply for Vinnova grants, I've got harsh news for you: 55% of all funding will go to Academia and Research. 31% of all funding will only go to Private Companies. Researchers are your top competition: - They can build competitive projects with highly industrial consortiums because it's their main job - They're top grant proposal writers because their salary and their organisation depend on grants How can you leverage this as a small company? Join projects being coordinated by Universities and Research Centers. They are constantly building consortiums for national and EU grants. It's their lifeblood. Contact trustworthy researchers in your network. Present them with your R&D needs. Ask if they're preparing any projects you can join. Evaluate the relevance of collaborating. Pitch and negotiate your way in if relevant. I know startups that have co-funded their entire full-scale systems doing this. Can't beat them? Join them.

The Small Business Transition Grant for New Entrepreneurs is a specialized SBIR/STTR Phase I and Fast-Track Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that aims to support career development and the conduct of research and development under a new entrepreneur’s direction. What makes this NOFO unique is: a) Early-career scientists and professionals with limited entrepreneurial and independent research leadership experience, i.e., they have never been an independent PD/PI on a major research grant, are the optimal Program Directors/Principal Investigators b) Applicants must identify mentor(s) to 1) provide technical and commercial guidance to advance the proposed research project and 2) support preparing/executing a career development plan to navigate the entrepreneurial process, develop/commercialize products, or operate a small business More information and resources about the Small Business Transition Grant for New Entrepreneurs can be found on SEED's website: https://lnkd.in/gKM9EXuE

Dear University Tech Transfer (Seemingly Everywhere...): 1) That IP you "own" was invented by someone PAYING to attend your school ostensibly to get an education. (Or, it's a professor...less bad but see below...) 2) Available licensing terms like upfront deal fees, upfront IP fees, royalty % fees, equity in the company, minimum yearly payments, success fee on exit, etc., etc., are meant to be "OR" terms not "AND" terms. 3) Your milestone requirements/claw backs are adorable. When you claw back this IP you are going to have WHO exactly carry the ball? Or will it return to that dusty shelf from whence it came? 4) Stop channeling your inner Gollum by treating every piece of "My Precious" IP like it's your only chance to fund your multi-billion dollar endowment. 5) Get the lawyers in the room FASTER (something I rarely say/believe...). Your non-lawyer decision makers are using Google University to draft these term sheets/licenses. 6) If you have more than $100MM in annual gov't funding for R&D you should be squirting out MORE than 1 or 2 startups a year. Period. 7) Grant awards are just "venture welfare" if you aren't trying to get that technology out into the real world. Let my people's IP go. It will be fruitful and multiply, I promise. #techtransfer #university #ip #patents

🚨𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐔𝐊 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬🚨 The Issue: UK Universities propose taking a 10% stake in software spinouts + royalties, a move that could stifle innovation and entrepreneurship. Our Stand: We advocate for fairer, more sustainable guidelines that encourage, not hinder, the growth of spinouts. The Solution: Proposed equitable guidelines include a maximum of 5% dilutable equity for universities, with special considerations for student-led and non IP-rich spinouts. Your Role: Support the open letter to TenU. Your signature can make a difference in shaping a future that values innovation and fair play. Act Now: We need 100 signatures! 7 Days left to prevent this calamity. 👉 SIGN HERE: https://lnkd.in/e9yNG53U & read the full letter in the comments below to foster a thriving ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship.
