How do we successfully navigate the “big soup” of digital regulations in Europe, the U.S. and around the globe? This topic is increasingly top of mind for regulators and practitioners and was discussed on the keynote panel of IAPP Global Privacy Summit 2024 in Washington, D.C. last week. I had the honor to share the stage with the U.S. FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, Australian Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind, and IBM’s Chief Privacy & Trust Officer Christina Montgomery. The overwhelming message: While digital policies are piling up and becoming more complex, privacy regulators and practitioners are well-positioned to foster strong digital governance and consumer trust. Everyone should know this by now, but the Federal Trade Commission has reiterated: “No, hashing still doesn't make your data anonymous.” Despite the simplicity and perceived security of hashing, it doesn't guarantee anonymity and can still identify individuals. Their latest blog highlights how companies mistakenly used hashing, leading to severe privacy breaches. From tracking users via hashed MAC addresses to sharing sensitive health info through hashed emails, it’s clear: Hashing alone isn’t enough. At Oblivious, we understand the importance of true data anonymisation. Our solution, Antigranular Enterprise, leverages Differential Privacy to ensure data remains genuinely anonymous and secure, preventing any possibility of re-identification, and enabling organisations to work with sensitive data without compromising privacy. How many times have you clicked "I accept" without even reading the terms? That’s no accident. Dark patterns are intentionally designed to guide you toward decisions that benefit companies—often at the expense of your data privacy. These subtle manipulations make it harder to protect your information or opt out of data sharing. As we become more aware of these practices, we can push for better transparency and control over our digital choices. How can we design for trust, not trickery?
