Daily Journaling Devotional -- Daily Word - True Church? Do you belong to the one true church? You can easily think of churches who claim to be The One. Do you find such an attitude off-putting? Is any church entirely free from this? It is admirable when churches take steps to minimize this effect, but at the end of the day, or on Sunday morning, you pull into one parking lot rather than another for a reason. It is preferable to have a strong sense of community rather than a weak one. Can you maintain one without the other? Can you belong to a strongly bonded community that recognizes the validity of my body taken as a whole?

What can we do to lean into health as churches, organizations, and as individuals so that belonging happens in a healthy way? How can our church members help others to feel loved and accepted even when they’re new? How can churches help pastors and their family feel part of the church even if there isn’t a long history? What can we as leaders do to bring others together in the name of Jesus?

My new book Culture Shift: Leading a Growing Church in Uncertain Times is now on the market. These are difficult times for churches. Less than half the population of the United States and Canada are now members of any church, and the percentage of people who call themselves Christian or even believe in God is rapidly declining. And yet, churches still have the potential to grow into vibrant, life-giving communities that engage the culture, attract new members, do good works and share the good news of God's amazing love in Jesus. Culture Shift is a book for clergy, lay leaders and anyone interested reversing church decline. It not only provides insights and perspective about the culture but also offers the tools and resources to evaluate a congregation and develop a turnaround strategy. It is an excellent book for strategic ministry planning. Mainline Protestant churches, and particularly the Episcopal Church in the United States and the Anglican Church of Canada will find this book of immense value.

If a pastor isn’t committed to his church, people will notice. If a pastor’s family isn’t committed to their church, people will notice. If a pastor’s family isn’t committed to the church, you can’t expect the average family to be committed to the church. If a pastor isn’t committed to the church, you can’t expect the average person to be committed to the church.
