As Nano4Imaging is also moving this to the adult interventions with its devices, passive marker technolgy and software, it is the next logical step to move this topic top of mind within a broader range of hospitals. Thanks for a couple of good days in Copenhagen at LSX Nordic! It has been a good opportunity to catch up with partners in the Danish life science innovation ecosystem and share our lessons and reflections on how Nordic innovators can make the most of opportunities in the US. A couple of insights from the conference: 💡 On nationalism and regionalism: Denmark stands out as one of the most dense and well-supported biotech hubs in Europe. However, to succeed globally, we need the Nordics as a region to drive excellence. 💡 It is easy and cheap to say, but much harder to do—we need patients, clinicians, and nurses to be more involved, and more meaningfully involved, in all stages of healthcare innovation. While it is easy to point fingers at others who should do more, we need to start by asking ourselves: how can we embody this in our work? 💡 In discussions on Nordic healthcare innovation, the US market is always a key consideration, either directly or in the background. It’s encouraging that across the Nordics, even early-stage ventures understand that to drive impact, business, and investment, they must develop products and business cases that work beyond the region. Making it across the Atlantic requires solid homework, serious field work, and high quality network. Great to be back in Neuchatel for the Optica Advanced Manufacturing workshop! It was also a fantastic occasion to reconnect with my former colleagues at Focuslight Switzerland (formerly SUSS MicroOptics). The journey to openly push the Advanced Manufacturing Alliance began at the NILID conference in Vienna and continued at Optica's event at EV Group, being tired if hearing the same talks year over year and seing technologies hitting the same roadblocks again and again. I've always been a strong supporter of establishing strong networks, collaboratively increasing customer value and growing the pie for everyone. I'm delighted that Jose Pozo and Oliver Fähnle have taken the initiative to move it forward. While this summit brought together 140 representatives from innovative companies with key enabling products, it was clear that some major players were missing. The discussions also revealed that the alliance's purpose and vision need further refinement. However, Switzerland, as a small, united, and neutral nation with a strong currency (potentially analogous to micro-optics/electronics), might be a well-suited launchpad. The Swiss example of unity in a larger ecosystem could serve as a valuable model. In his opening remarks, Knut Siercks, Head of Technology and Site Manager at the OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences Buchs Campus, underscored the importance of manufacturing expertise for Eastern Switzerland’s industrial landscape. A key highlight was the introduction of the 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐛, presented by Tobias Lamprecht from OST. This initiative aims to transform the existing capabilities of OST and RhySearch at the Hightech Campus Buchs into a state-of-the-art center for sensor development. Supported by Switzerland Innovation Park Ost, the Hub will provide Swiss industry with advanced resources and innovation opportunities. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐮𝐛 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞: ▫ Optics and photonics ▫ Precision manufacturing ▫ Semiconductor technology ▫ Measurement technology and sensors The importance of these topics was further underscored by two industry leaders who shared valuable insights on the benefits of research collaboration for SMEs, illustrating how partnerships with academic institutions can drive innovation. A dedicated workshop followed, where participants actively discussed the initiative’s direction, affirming its positive impact on the region.
