The Magic of Music: Music can have a profound effect on a listener. The way it transforms your emotions or even transports your imagination, it holds power over a person. It’s a musician’s responsibility to see that the listener will benefit from it. In visual media, that effect is amplified. Whether it’s a film, a game or even a YouTube video, a musician must understand the purpose of the visual and moreso understand how to utilize rhythm, melody, harmony, volume and silence in such a way that the viewer can benefit. But it goes much further. We don’t always just want the viewer/listener to benefit and leave it at that… sometimes we want them to feel part of the art. If they can hear it and feel immersed or part of something larger than themselves… suddenly the music becomes a part of their soul or identity. This is the magic of music.

Music Wish words could turn into music, What beauty it could bring to arguments! It could make conversations more meaningful. Have you ever thought of a grand composition, Bringing its notes into a fight, And leaving the audience in awe of its melody? Why hurt someone, When you could channel the emotions of pure harmony into music? What is the point of arguing, If it cannot bring peace to your tone? Why not bring two enemies to a music concert together? By the end, they would embrace, Happily parting ways with the gift of music. Music has the power to bring everyone together. If words don’t work, Why can’t music be used to express ourselves? Wish words could turn into music.

This is Rick Rubin. He has worked with Eminem, Kanye, and Adele yet claims he "knows nothing about music." 7 lessons from the most fascinating human on earth: 1. Embrace Minimalism: Rick Rubin isn’t your typical producer. In a world filled with over-the-top production, his minimalist approach highlights the true spirit of the artist. 2. The Art of Subtraction: Rubin’s mantra, "things that go together but don’t match," highlights his preference for raw, unrefined beauty. Instead of polishing every detail, he magnifies what’s authentic. 3. Grit and Grace: Take his work with Johnny Cash on the ‘American Recordings’ series for example. Rubin’s minimalism emphasized Cash’s powerful, weathered voice, creating a powerful sound with just guitar or piano. 4. Spotlighting Talent: Rubin’s collaboration with Adele on the album ‘21’ is a testament to his ability to refine an artist’s voice. He allowed Adele’s vocals to shine with unmatched emotional intensity by using minimal accompaniment. 5. The Power of Space: Rubin uses silence and negative space to enhance the emotional impact of music. This approach helps listeners focus on the subtle nuances of the performance, making each element more poignant. 6. Creating the Right Environment: Rubin’s studios are designed for comfort and creativity. He creates a relaxed atmosphere that encourages artists to experiment and find their authentic sound without the pressures of time or cost. 7. Focusing on Authenticity: Rubin’s method involves guiding artists to explore their true selves. His production is less about flashy effects and more about uncovering the core of an artist’s expression. So, what does all this mean for young artists moving forward? Rubin’s career teaches us that true impact often comes from simplicity. It’s not about the flashy effects but about focusing on what really matters. By embracing authenticity and simplicity, you can uncover a new depth in your music. So, how will you apply Rubin’s principles to your own sound? --- Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this: 1. Let me present to you Orbit, a music discovery service we've developed in collaboration with BBC Introducing. No personalised algorithms, just use your ears: https://lnkd.in/g_9Pw5qq Andrew Wood and I have been working on the development and design for the last 6 months and I still can't quite believe we get to make things that are so cool and can help artists and audiences connect. Of course, it wouldn't be possible without Rob Scott, Tristan Ferne and Clare McAndrew who've shepherd this into existence with so much respect for our idiosyncratic process. This project started when we heard from users that personalised algorithms made them feel stuck in a box they hadn't consciously chosen or designed. They said they found music discovery on their own terms difficult, they can't find new tracks when they want to, it just happens to them, outside of their control. So instead of receiving recommendations, you actively make decisions based on what you hear and what resonates with you in the moment. For that, we take the last month's batch of what the incredible BBC Introducing team has been playing and we organise it using data extracted from within the track itself. Whether other people like it, whether it's been skipped before etc. doesn't matter. Similar tracks are placed close together and each is a potential doorway to something different. You’ll start with 10 samples, each representing a different space within the collection. There's not artist name, metadata or even images. Your choice is based on what you hear. If you hear something you like, you can reveal the artist and track title. You can sample as many tracks as you like, but you can only reveal five tracks a day. This isn’t about limiting discovery — it's about making each track count and respecting the user's time which is something that kept coming back in our research. No infinite scroll here. You can find what you like and get on with your day. Building this, I've already discovered so many new artists, I'm eager to hear if you do too!

I prefer to divide the music elements into two groups: primary and secondary. The primary elements can be easily heard and understood by virtually anyone, whilst the secondary ones require a deeper music understanding and further study.
