Word of the day: 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 My favourite concept whenever we work with partner organisations. We apply our outsight. Not just following the dictionary definition (ability to perceive external things), we believe outsight is the ability to see something from an unusual (external) perspective. You’ve seen this many times: whenever you hired a new team member, they unconsciously showed outsight (“why is this process so complex?”, “is there a reason we even do this?”, “could we follow a process I had in my previous job?”). Outsight is priceless, and too often we don’t pay enough attention to it. Such outsight fizzles out over time. Insight takes over. How can we retain outsight?

IThanks to Michelle Hartley FCIPD for this shout-out for Happy High Status: How to Be Effortlessly Confident. Really grateful to readers who are spreading the message about this book which —despite its ridiculously optimistic easy-breezy subtitle (immediately unpacked in chapter one — it takes effort in the past to be effortless in the present…) — is my attempt to say something *profound* about confidence. The concept of Happy High Status — and of status more generally — comes from stage, comedy and improv and was pioneered by the late Keith Johnstone, theatre director and founding father of improv. When I was first performing stand-up, it was his ideas that transformed how I thought about my confidence in relation to myself in real life (because you can’t “fake it ‘til you make it” with yourself) and in relation to others on stage or in pressured situations. I’m fascinated by the different ways we relate to ourselves in different situations. We don’t worry about our confidence when we are in unpressured situations. We don’t even think about it. And yet we are still the same person when we go into a stressful situation. So why — especially when we often know that this situation would be stressful to any human being and is not a personal attack on us — do we suddenly feel like our confidence is different? Theatre, comedy and performance have great answers to this question: how to be what you are not and yet make it seem real to the extent that it becomes real. This is not about “acting” or “pretending” or “playing a role” — just as great acting is not about hypnotising yourself so that you believe you are another person… It’s about channelling another part of yourself — you learn to channel the “me from relaxed situations” into the “me in unrelaxed situations.” Because you are always the same person. So why behave as if you’re not? It’s a profound idea but once you have seen it in yourself, you start to see it everywhere and it becomes simple.
