Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression. They drew their ideology from the Black Panther Party and pre-dated animal and environmental rights groups like PETA and Earth First. MOVE emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by the long, doomed war in Vietnam, Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance, and, eventually, President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs. MOVE members lived together in a collection of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. This was prescient years ago from Ken Loach. Look now at the rise of Farage and the Reform Party on the hard to far right. Note how Starmer veers from centrism, which supports the neo-liberal establishment at every turn, to explicitly hard-right politics (racism in the dog-whistle against Bangladeshi immigrants or the thought that more pain will get us less pain later, which are both unconscionable lies!). This all mirrors the hegemony of a growing new hard-right establishment, ever crystallising and solidifying as I write. Act so that it does not move even further rightwards. Only the people from below can check the centrism and the hard-rightism, which are both ultimately from above. The vast quantities of disillusionment have been turning into a qualitative hard-right turn and shift for years, because capitalism endlessly stokes the social war, the economic war and the political war against ordinary people and thus against the most inclusive forms of life, politics, society and economic organisation. In smashing and blocking the left, as I have said over again, Starmer organically builds the further shift toward a greater and greater political breakthrough on the hard to far right. Even potentially Farage as PM. The only way to counter this is to build forces from the bottom up and from the left to achieve the utmost inclusivity from and for ordinary people and the working classes, but also including left-wing middle-class forces, too: yet only in terms of supporting or acting from and for the excluded, the exploited and the oppressed. Build for redistribution, build for Palestine and Lebanon, build for a winter fuel allowance for all, build for a greener world, support the right to asylum and immigration for those fleeing persecution and war sponsored and supported by the UK and the US and its allies, build up a free NHS at the point of use and break down the personification of lies, obfuscation and centrist to harder-right nonsense that is Keir Starmer and the Labour leadership on all issues including the lie that there is no money in the kitty. There is an alternative to austerity and continued poverty imposed on all from above. Break out of the sorry, soggy, slipshod and soppily weird notion of the economy as a large home-budget sort of a Little-Economy-ist mindset (on direct analogy with the Little-Englander mindset), as that is the most inapplicable error itself, both economically AND politically. Making THAT stupid error of misapplication of levels, intellectually, is the biggest political and economic error itself. Build left and build for the independent and inclusive interests for all, for the many, not the few...
