Fatal overdoses have gone through the roof in South Texas, a San Antonio Express-News/Emilie Eaton investigation found. Yet treatment options are scarce and costly. Baominh Vinh, a pain medicine physician in the Houston area who lobbies for policies to curb the opioid epidemic, said some legislators initially were hesitant to support fentanyl test strips out of concern that they enable recreational drug use. “The deaths from illegally manufactured fentanyl are increasing, and it’s even affecting high school kids. If we were able to legalize those strips, I think it would help.”

We are seeing a decline in #Opioid overdose fatalities for the first time since the beginning of the #FourthWave. As I travel around country, many have asked about the causes of the reduction. My answer is, “it depends on who you ask.” My friends in treatment point to increased access to #MOUD treatment, friends in prevention point to greater awareness and outreach efforts. Harm reduction experts say that it’s due to massive naloxone distribution, fentanyl testing strips and use in pairs messaging. While colleagues in law enforcement cite suppression and harsh sentencing for distribution. The true answer likely exists in the center of a collective effort to confront this public health crisis. And, while we should celebrate and lift up these efforts, we must also acknowledge that these positive outcomes are not being experienced equitably. Black and Native American teen overdose deaths continue to rise, along with postpartum people and recently incarcerated individuals. These data demonstrate the need for an ongoing comprehensive response to the opioid epidemic.

Let's push for more comprehensive measures to support those affected by substance use and work together towards lasting change. Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that significantly increases penalties for fentanyl exposure involving first responders. While “aimed at combating the opioid crisis”, it is crucial to shed light on the broader implications this legislation will have on the vulnerable populations it will undoubtedly harm. The increase in penalties will lead to unjustified arrests and longer sentences for those who need support and, or treatment, rather than punishment. This approach exacerbates the stigma attached to addiction, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to seek the services they need. This is just more evidence that the 'war on drugs' has turned into a war on people who use drugs. It's important to highlight that the “heightened risk” associated with fentanyl exposure, particularly to first responders, is not supported by scientific evidence. Studies have shown that the risk is exceedingly low, challenging the rationale behind such punitive measures. At Impact Life we will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize health-based interventions, so we can better support people who use drugs and address the underlying challenges associated with addiction. It’s well past time to shift the focus from punitive to supportive measures, ensuring our approach is grounded in compassion and science. #PublicHealth #AddictionRecovery #Legislation #SocialImpact #ScienceBasedPolicy
