Can electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft redefine urban air mobility? Airbus has taken a significant leap forward with its remotely piloted flight tests for the full-scale prototype of the City Airbus NextGen. Following a rigorous development phase, which included extensive ground tests in December 2023, the aircraft is now set for operational readiness. This four-seat eVTOL, designed for short-distance urban travel, can reach speeds of 120 km/h and cover distances up to 80 km. The project is spearheaded by Airbus’s urban air mobility (UAM) unit, with teams in Toulouse developing advanced battery packs using satellite technology. Airbus is also collaborating with over 30 partners, including Deutsche Bahn, Munich Airport International, and Skyports Infrastructure, under the Bavarian Air Mobility Initiative to establish a sustainable eVTOL ecosystem. In addition, Airbus has secured partnerships with ITA Airways, Enel Group, and UrbanV in Italy, and is exploring EMS missions with the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation (Stiftelsen Norsk Luftambulanse). These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to integrate eVTOLs into public transportation and emergency response systems.
