Today marks #WorldNatureConservationDay, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources and ecosystems. We believe in a future where communities and ecosystems thrive in harmony and critical water sources remain pristine for generations to come. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing sustainable solutions designed to help you save water, energy, and operational costs – while also helping preserve our ecosystems. IMPACT TOGETHER: The Colorado River Basin Project is our initiative that promotes water conservation efforts in the Colorado River Basin area so that wildlife communities can continue to flourish. LAST CHANCE: Take Action! 📣 Protect Oregon's Old Growth 🌲 Despite the worsening dual climate and biodiversity crises, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing to log thousands of acres of pristine, resilient old-growth forest habitat in Oregon’s Coast Range. The Blue and Gold logging project, located west of Yoncalla in the Umpqua River watershed, has some of the last remaining unlogged, carbon-storing older forests in the region. The agency plans to aggressively log and build roads in old growth habitat essential to imperiled species including the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet. The main justification for the Blue and Gold project is, not surprisingly, to meet timber production targets. Take Action today to Halt the Blue and Gold project! Cascadia Wildlands

Rivers in their natural, undisturbed state are not just water flowing from one place to another; they are lifelines of biodiversity. They support countless species, including fish that migrate up and down the river for breeding and feeding. Rivers also play a crucial role in cleansing water naturally and mitigating floods, making them invaluable for maintaining ecological balance and supporting human communities nearby. https://lnkd.in/dMF5bKbf

Land restoration is one of the key themes of #WorldEnvironmentDay. IPBC Partners recognise the essential impact of blue carbon ecosystems to protect coastlines from erosion and storm surge, provide habitat to terrestrial and marine species, and support the communities that rely on them. Restoration of these landscapes is vitally important as degraded mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass ecosystems emit, rather than sequester carbon dioxide and put the survival of biodiversity and communities at risk. The IPBC’s goals are to increase international commitments, improve national policies, and accelerate on-the-ground implementation of blue carbon conservation, protection and restoration activities. These contribute to the sustainable management of our precious environment. Today is World Environment Day, with a focus on growing forests, reviving water sources, and bringing back soils. 🌱 Tinytag count data loggers are used by the Peak District National Park Authority to help monitor the impact of moorland conservation and restoration on rainfall flowing overland across the surface of the moor. Along with removing/reducing pollution from our rivers, we must allow them to flow freely. They must be connected to their floodplains. Wherever possible, manmade barriers should be removed to allow wildlife passage, as well as the downstream supply of sediment, which generates new habitat and diversifies flow conditions, all of which contribute to the creation of habitat niches for our local wildlife. Surprisingly, only 1% of the UK's rivers are free of artificial barriers. Understanding the catchment as a whole, is crucial, and addressing artificial barriers requires collaboration across sectors to achieve real environmental achievement. We will never see a properly restored and resilient river basin in the UK unless we remove unnecessary artificial obstacles. Removing barriers “results in the greatest impact the most rapidly and for the least amount of money,” Access the full article below: https://lnkd.in/efPY67EA #letitflow #damremoval #rivers

Water scarcity doesn’t just affect humans, but nature and wildlife too. Many species native to the drought-ridden Colorado River Basin area are facing the risks brought on by the decline of water resources. As water-related issues continue to rise, we are committed to ensuring that the wildlife communities and ecosystems relying on critical water sources continue to flourish. We’re advocating for water conservation in the Colorado Basin through our initiative, Impact Together: The Colorado River Basin Project. #Groundwater, the world's largest freshwater reserve, supports diverse #Ecosystems crucial for #biodiversity. Yet, excessive pumping is depleting aquifers, putting species like blind cave eels and cave salamanders at risk. We need to ensure #sustainable groundwater use and elevate awareness to safeguard these hidden but critical ecosystems. Read more : https://bit.ly/48kRm5Y

New research identifies ecosystems around the world that could be threatened by declining #groundwater levels. In the study published today in Nature, lead author Melissa Rohde from The Nature Conservancy and #DRI's Christine Albano emphasize the critical role of groundwater in sustaining global ecosystems and how healthy groundwater systems support #biodiversity and #climateadaptation. Why reforestation doesn’t always lead to restoration As climate change and other environmental challenges continue to threaten ecosystems across the globe, planting trees might seem like an obvious—and relatively simple—solution. But non-forest ecosystems, such as savannas and tropical grasslands, won’t benefit from increased tree cover. And in some cases, well-meaning attempts at reforestation can actually do far more harm than good. In a new Science Policy Forum, researchers draw attention to the potential dangers associated with the African Forest Restoration Initiative and other projects that seek to restore degraded and deforested landscapes across Africa. According to their analysis, vast swathes of grassland—adding up to a total area that exceeds the size of France—are inappropriately classified as forest under current programs. Planting trees in these areas, they warn, could devastate the many plant and animal species that are adapted to grassland habitats, as well as the human communities that depend on them. These misguided efforts, they add, also divert resources from damaged forest ecosystems that genuinely need them. “Increasing tree cover in open ecosystems globally represents a major threat, not only for the ecosystems themselves but ultimately for society as a whole,” the authors write. “We must act to avoid a situation where we cannot see the savanna for the trees, and these precious grassy systems are lost irrevocably.” https://lnkd.in/eu7fxZnD
