The biggest cost factor in CCS technology is CO2 retention, and the main risk is CO2 leaking back into the atmosphere. Where can CO2 leakage occur in underground storage? 1. CO2 injected underground can leak from the drill pipe. 2. Old drilling wells for gas and oil present a leakage risk, with the risk increasing with the number of wells. 3. Faults in the injected area can also cause CO2 leakage. The safest method for storing CO2 involves dissolving it in water to form solid minerals, which eliminates the chance of CO2 reaching the Earth's surface.
