In the academic sphere, there's a concerning trend: the proliferation of cloned versions of journals. These journals, often resorting to tactics like Scopus, Xcategory, and the like, prioritize profit over quality, ultimately leading to publication in fake journals. Even local Pakistani journals, from their language to their methodology, are riddled with countless errors and lack any semblance of quality—instead, they exhibit negative quality. It's as simple as paying up, regardless of the age of the submission, to secure publication—a farce, to say the least. Moreover, institutions like the Higher Education Commission (HEC) demand hefty sums to include journals in their Higher Journal Recognition System (HJRS), further compromising quality standards. Adding to the issue are the prevalence of scammers masquerading as agents, offering dubious services. Additionally, within universities, educators often assign research projects and assignments to their students, positioning themselves as secondary authors, padding their publication count by adding the names of multiple students, and profiting from publication fees. This has become the norm for a staggering 90% of PhD holders—a disheartening reality where quality research is overshadowed by quantity. 📚 Shining a Light on Questionable Academic Practices 📚 A recent study by Lokman Meho and Elie Akl, published in Quantitative Science Studies, highlights concerning trends in academic publishing metrics. The report uncovers how some universities may be engaging in unethical practices, like authorship manipulation, to artificially boost their publication metrics. Key findings: 🔍 Between 2019 and 2023, several institutions reported publication increases of over 100%. 🔍 At the same time, first-author contributions significantly declined — a potential indicator of "guest authorship" or even the sale of author slots. Examples: Future University in Egypt: Publications rose from 127 to 1,368 (+977%). Chandigarh University in India: Publications jumped from 362 to 2,281 (+530%). Both universities saw a 15% or greater drop in first-author rates. Why does this matter? Ethical breaches like these distort academic rankings, undermine research integrity, and devalue the hard work of honest researchers. It's crucial for institutions, funding bodies, and policymakers to implement stricter guidelines and monitoring mechanisms to safeguard the credibility of academia. JALT is a Scopus-indexed (Q1 in Scopus), open-access academic journal that neither charges its readers nor its authors. We are pleased to present a research article from Argentina and Germany by Prof Guadalupe Alvarez & Prof Ulrike Cress: The uses of digital technologies in dissertation writing: Perspectives of Argentine graduate students in social sciences and humanities "Digital technologies have transformed both the working practices of postgraduate students and the textual production for scholarly research communication. However, little is yet known about the role played by these technologies in dissertation writing. The aim of this study is to further the understanding of dissertation writing in the digital age from the perspective of Argentine graduate students in Social Sciences and Humanities. Based on a sample of eight doctoral students from Argentine national universities, we conducted a qualitative study drawing on in-depth interviews and documentary analysis. The findings provide insights into digital technologies, their uses, associated benefits and challenges, and ways of learning about them. The study concludes that dissertation writing activities are currently mediated by digital technologies and that these technology-mediated activities are conditioned by individual routines and practices, and by the role played by others in the progress of the manuscript. Additionally, we show that engagement with digital technologies in the dissertation writing process has intensified with the pandemic, becoming a critical skill for building knowledge in the 21st century. Our small-scale study contributes to initiating an understanding of the topic in Latin America and to broadening the global body of knowledge in the research area." #BiPSUEMpowerment | In our goal to equip students with critical research and writing skills that will not only raise academic standards but will enhance students’ future employability, we recently held a research mentorship workshop on writing thought papers publishable in Scopus-Indexed Journals for our academic scholars. While increasing the volume of Scopus publications is a valuable outcome, the primary goal is to prepare our scholars for success in their careers that will benefit them long after graduation. Held yesterday, November 28, at the student center, the activity aims to assist the participants in producing high-quality scholarly articles and effectively learn on publishing in reputable international journals. Here is a compilation of the science news reports published in Current Science in the second quarter of 2024 - a sample of 46 news reports based on papers published by Indian Researchers. Indian researchers would have published around 40,000 papers between April and June this year. So it is really a very small sample. But considering that the reports are written only for practicing science writing skills and that it is an unpaid voluntary activity by researchers, scientists and science faculty in India, it is a phenomenon worth emulating. https://lnkd.in/dPudmsgV

One of the exciting steps taken by the Indian government is to take Nationwide access to all the journals from various publishers. This will change the whole landscape of science and engineering in India within few years. It was really painful to access the journal articles from standard publishers (had to use proxies or disturb friends etc.). National subscription will (i) not only give access to latest in science and technology but also give an opportunity to smaller institutions to think of quality research. (ii) We can use latest information from the publications and show it to students during teaching. Huge advantage. My article futured in Countercurrents, and it talks about. The academic landscape is increasingly plagued by the rise of predatory journals. These illegitimate publications, often masquerading as legitimate scholarly outlets, lure unsuspecting researchers with promises of quick publication and high impact factors. Interacting with researchers at the Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi, was excellent. I tried to explore the knowledge of Crafting, Writing, and Publishing Research Articles in top, high-impact journals. Different examples were shown to help them understand how to write a good abstract and conclusion to their research work. You need this, too, if you are a scholar, researcher, or scientist!
