It's amazing how California tends to be the forefront for environmentalism and concepts of "eco friendly" farming. But we find ourselves watching farmers and vineyards rip out and destroying plants just because they aren't useful at the moment due to low demand??? While watching this news report, we pulled up the open source data and saw that the supply and demand were in fact down. But that's not really any reason to destroy the crop when you can prune back and wait until the next year. Imagine tearing out the crops, then having to wait another 2-4+ years to get the crop back when supply is back? How redundant is that idea? Just let the grapes rot, at least the plants are still viable after the time frame when it's needed. We also saw that vinegar of all types were in higher demand all around the world. A quick rethink of end product could have saved all that hassle and annoyance. Bad business leadership and lack of adaptability is something that all businesses struggle with. As autumn nears, harvest planning is key. Hand harvesting ensures precision, with skilled pickers selecting only the best grapes - ideal for premium wines like English Sparkling Wine. However, labour shortages and advances in technology are making mechanical harvesting more appealing. Modern machine harvesters are now capable of handling grapes delicately, working quickly, even at night, to deliver quality fruit efficiently. Are the loss of wine grape production in France due to vine pulls an.opportunity for Australia? Some Politicians and even Corporate wineries think so. The reality is quite the opposite. There must be a reduction in tonnage produced in Australia to restore viability. The question then becomes how many hectares and who pays? Growers will struggle to afford a vine pull due to several years of sliding prices and negative returns. Then, very importantly, what becomes of thousands of hectares of quality irrigated land that is mostly small blocks? We need to have a 'real' conversation; no more speculation, no more indecision. Next week is expected to be our last week of harvest for the year! Not much left in the fields, but our storage areas tell the story of a successful harvest and we are thankful 🙂 The mild weather has brought us a few more surprises, like this chard. Chard is usually susceptible to frost damage, but we're seeing a new resiliency brought about with the warmer days, and the recurring frosts no longer seem to bother these plants. We had an unexpected harvest of this vibrant red chard, looking especially gorgeous next to the gold (unfortunately there wasn't enough of the gold colour).
