The new digital world is different and the media industry have to adapt to the new context. “If you’re out here, trying to be precise to the decimal on every metric, you’re missing the point of advertising altogether". Automation is killing creativity and effectiveness... These and many other insights in this interview with Scott Schiller, NYU professor and media expert. Highly recommended.

MFA - SHRINKING THE GREY (the video part) MFAs are hard to solve because they generally fall into a big grey area. You know what's not grey though? Muted autoplay video ads that declare themselves as In-stream and command a large price premium, when their inaudibility clearly defines them as Outstream. Marketers can instantaneously run reports and see what % of the *declared* "In-stream" video ads they run are actually muted, and how those CPMs compare to the video ads they run that are correctly signaled as Outstream. I know it's easy to throw our hands up and say these things are hard, and complicated, and many of them truly are (yes, actual marketing has never been and will never be easy). But when we have really obvious examples of fraud/inefficiency, with straightforward solutions, we have no more excuses. Buyers have a way (and an easy one at that). They just don't seem to have the will. #QualityMatters

The media supply chain is an ever changing beast. There were some revealing conversations about the recently rising (or risen?) tide of FAST channels, whilst at The Media Production & Technology Show, which led me to look again into the pending legislation changes, that will bring online streaming services into the scope of OFCOM. The plans, as detailed on the gov.uk site, are an interesting read. https://lnkd.in/eM8WcjhJ How much appetite will there be to expand the FAST channel offerings when this legislation is made effective, and have we already seen the peak of this type of offering? Has enough ad revenue been generated to make it worthwhile to continue the channels, whilst applying the more rigorous broadcast-level checks and balances that are required for compliance, and guarantee quality? It seems most FAST channels are a good excuse to air high quality back catalogue content, that has been gathering dust (figuratively speaking) on archive disks that long since stopped spinning (only a few years ago I could’ve saved some text and said ‘on library shelves!’ 😁 ) Another interesting take on the FAST channel offerings in this article here - https://lnkd.in/emhSM-qQ Will we see a decline in FAST channels or will those companies that can afford to centralise the process with their OTT, VOD and broadcast operations, forecast the generation of a decent revenue? Answers on a postcard…..or in the comments below 😊 If you need help building, running, refining your media supply chain, including your planned FAST channels then get in touch. The FNL Partner Network can definitely help you get ready for the legislation - contact@fnlmedia.co.uk https://lnkd.in/eMg24urP #FASTchannels #mediasupplychain #mediaandbroadcast #media #FNL #mediaconsultancy #programmemanagement #projectmanagement #mediastrategy

AN INTERESTING COURT CASE OUT OF FRANCE: Dave Farber via ip.topicbox.com 8:30 AM (4 minutes ago) Begin forwarded message: From: Dewayne Hendricks < dewayne@warpspeed.com > Date: June 16, 2024 at 21:01:37 JST To: Multiple recipients of Dewayne-Net <dewayne-net@warpspeed.com> Subject: [Dewayne-Net] Google, Cloudflare & Cisco Will Poison DNS to Stop Piracy Block Circumvention Reply-To: dewayne-net@warpspeed.com [Note: This item comes from friend Steve Schear. DLH] Google, Cloudflare & Cisco Will Poison DNS to Stop Piracy Block Circumvention By Andy Maxwell Jun 13 2024 A French court has ordered Google, Cloudflare, and Cisco to poison their DNS resolvers to prevent circumvention of blocking measures, targeting around 117 pirate sports streaming domains. The move is another anti-piracy escalation for broadcaster Canal+, which also has permission to completely deindex the sites from search engine results. In France, where laws were introduced with site-blocking and similar anti-piracy measures already baked in, entertainment giant Canal+ seems intent on taking full advantage. Like similar broadcasters with lucrative sports rights to exploit, Canal+ has a subset of viewers who prefer to consume from pirate sources which charge much less, or even nothing at all. To maximize its existing site-blocking efforts through local ISPs, the French broadcaster has now taken the logical, albeit controversial, next step on the site-blocking ladder. 'Radio: The Performance Multiplier' is the UK’s most comprehensive study of radio advertising’s impact on online search behaviour and website traffic growth. Conducted by Radiocentre in partnership with Colourtext, our study uses advanced regression modelling to isolate the effect of each advertising channel on website traffic growth. This computes the proportion of the total traffic uplift attributable to radio, which allows for an accurate measurement of radio's specific impact within the broader media mix.
