Age Disadvantage or Experience Advantage? Yes, I missed my chance to win the IronMan World Championship back in 2018 😉—Patrick Lange took the title. Just yesterday, he clinched his third win and smashed the course record. Watching his triumph brings back incredible memories from my race in Kona, but it also makes me think… Patrick is now 38 years old and just won the most challenging one-day endurance event, competing against much younger athletes (the average age of the top ten finishers was 32.5, and Magnus Ditlev, who placed second, is 12 years younger than Patrick). So, is age a disadvantage, or is experience a key success factor here? If experience can be an asset in professional sports, why is it often seen as a barrier in the financial industry? 🚵🏽 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗕 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 36𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 🥇   I love the Olympics, every 4 years there are always stories of human sacrifice alongside the rollercoaster 🎢 of emotions and fine margins as athletes compete to win gold. 🏆   💪🏽Despite the puncture, Team GB Mountain Biker Tom Pidcock showed remarkable belief and composure to work his way back through the field and win the gold medal.   😌 His support team also did not appear to be in a panic when they had to replace his front tyre as quickly as possible. There was an element of luck (sometimes we need this too) as he was close to his "pit" when he got the puncture. What is even more impressive is that the race leader was a Frenchmen who was getting incredible support from the home crowd. This has been one of the most inspiring stories so far at the Olympics outside of the more publicised stories of athletes overcoming their demons such as that of Simone Biles and Adam Peaty (also just as inspiring!)   The pressure and expectation to perform at a single event every 4 years is an achievement in itself for these athletes.   Athletes show us the required magic formula of both 👟 physical and 🧠 mental wellbeing that underpins elite performance. ❤️ The other thing to mention here is even though these are "individual" sports they are really all team sports. There team consisting with engineers, medical staff etc. and of course families; all playing their part.   So much to think about and learn from these athletes in our own careers and personal lives. Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork. Regardless of who is on your team...you won't get very far if you are not all rowing in the same direction...or...swimming in the proper lane!! The US women set a new world record in the 4 x 100 medley relay race...and it was not really even close. In a sport separated by tenths or hundredths of seconds, they won by over 3 seconds! Anyone in business can easily make the comparison of team sports and your team in business. Everyone having a job to do, and the other teammates depending on one another to do that job...for the success of the project, the company...or the race! I am loving these Olympic games...the stories of triumph and overcoming obstacles are just so inspiring. And, the sheer emotion of the wins, slight losses or just even finishing... is visible on every competitors face... be it these amazing young women here or so many other athletes from around the world. So freakin' cool!!! GO FOR GOLD!!! Reflecting on the recently concluded 2024 Olympics, one key takeaway stood out to me. The prevailing mindset of settling for lesser medals once reaching certain stages of competition is concerning. Automatically assuming silver when making it to the semifinals or settling for bronze when in the medal reckoning is counterproductive to a champion's mentality. At the pinnacle of sporting excellence, where every athlete aspires to achieve their best and emerge victorious, we must aim for the gold without hesitation. The prevalent acceptance of anything other than gold, whether in discussions by commentators or on social media, is contrary to the spirit of true champions. It's essential to recognize that the universe responds to the energy and intentions we put out. By collectively focusing on anything but gold, we inadvertently attract outcomes that fall short of the ultimate prize. We're happy to share the news that our funding from UK Sport for our World Class Performance Programme for the cycle to take us to LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games has seen a near 3% rise for Olympic sports while the para equestrian programme has been boosted by just under 10%. Totaling over £15.5 million, the funding covers the period from April 2025 to March 2029 and is key to supporting our athletes and horses on the programmes which help them develop and realise their potential to perform on the world's biggest stages. BEF Performance Director Helen Nicholls said: "We are extremely grateful to UK Sport for their recognition and belief in our ability to deliver medals and meaningful results on the global stage. Thanks also to the Government in providing financial stability and security with this enhanced commitment to elite level sport - being able to plan long term is a key in sporting success and gives a huge performance advantage. "The LA cycle will certainly be a financial challenge across our four Olympic and Paralympic disciplines, but we will work hard and smart to support our athletes to develop and grow, as well as inspiring the next generation and new supporters with their achievements and stories, in and out of the saddle." World Test Championship spot on the line and all contenders will be in action in Test Cricket. F1 Season will come to a close at Abu Dhabi and everyone’s eyes will be on who picks the Constructors Championship. McLaren last won it in 1998 while Ferrari’s last title came in 2008. It certainly will be a great home-coming for one of them. But if I were to pause and look back at the past week, one image has stayed back with me is the one where I saw Vinod Kambli trying to embrace Sachin Tendulkar, as the two met during the unveiling of a memorial for their childhood coach, Ramakant Achrekar. Two immensely talented individuals but such contrasting careers. It also served as a perfect reminder that success isn’t just about skill; it’s about pushing through mental barriers, believing in your own abilities, and finding strength in adversity. In today's world, where mental health isn’t really a question anyone can duck, sports have proved time and again that they have nothing to do with pure competition, but everything about personal growth, overcoming challenges, pushing the limits of what we think we are capable of. Whether it's a comeback from an injury, fighting off pressure, or conquering self-doubt, these stories reinforce that sports are a true reflection of life’s greatest lessons: resilience, grit, and the ability to rise after every fall.
