As we approach the end of the summer break, I wanted to share a quick recap of my internship experience. This summer, I successfully completed my second summer internship at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, under the guidance of Dr. Harekrushna Sahoo in the Department of Chemistry, this time focusing on the interaction of selenium nanoparticles with bone morphogenetic protein-2 using various spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, and Circular dichroism. I also got my hands on agar plate preparation, large-scale media preparation, setting of small cultures, and many more. This experience has been transformative, enriching my academic and personal growth in countless ways. 🔬 A Nostalgic Return to the Lab: Returning to the campus for my second internship, this time in a different department, brought back a flood of memories. The familiarity of the environment combined with the excitement of delving into a new field was a unique blend that fueled my passion for scientific exploration. 🔬 Inspiring Chemistry Lab Atmosphere: The dynamic and stimulating atmosphere of the chemistry lab played a pivotal role in my internship, pushing me to delve deeper into the mysteries of protein interactions and fluorescence phenomena. The hands-on experience and exposure to using instruments like a sonicator, laminar flow hood, shaker incubator, autoclave, spectrometers were invaluable. I also learned to use softwares such as PyMOL and Origin. This experience not only allowed me to handle complex equipment but also to plot and analyze data effectively. 🤝 Learning and Socializing with Seniors: One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to interact with and learn from the PhD Scholars and seniors. Their mentorship, guidance, and shared experiences were instrumental in navigating complex research questions and understanding career pathways. 🔄 Embracing Change and Switching Streams: Switching to a different department from physics to chemistry for this internship was initially daunting, but it proved to be a rewarding decision. It taught me the importance of embracing change and having the confidence to explore new fields. I am grateful for this opportunity and support from my mentors, colleagues, and the entire department. As I move forward, I am eager to apply the skills and knowledge I have acquired during this internship.

Today’s #PathwaysToScience Student Spotlight ✨ is Sandra Unorji! Sandra's research project focused on gel electrophoresis and its potential to separate conjugated polyelectrolytes by chain length. Her goal was to explore how various parameters, such as gel type, voltage, and density, impact the separation process. Sandra's decision to pursue this internship was driven by her desire to gain hands-on experience and bridge the gap between academic theories and real-world applications. Through extensive data analysis, collaboration with mentors and peers, and participation in workshops, she honed her technical skills and problem-solving abilities. Despite facing challenges and occasional setbacks, Sandra remained determined and proactive. She sought guidance from mentors, embraced feedback, and adapted her approach to overcome obstacles. Her perseverance and adaptability truly exemplify the qualities required for success in research. To students considering a summer research experience, Sandra offers valuable advice: choose a project that aligns with your career aspirations and personal interests, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Remember, resilience and adaptability are just as important as academic skills in research settings. #PathwaysToScience #StudentSpotlight #Research #Internship #STEM #ScienceResearch

Doing Internship at DBT and CSIR Sponsored lab. Most of the students while doing master apply for Internship at these institutes, some of will get seat to do internship there, in most of the cases this will be paid internship where students have to pay and they charge huge under the name of training, first of all why you have to charge student while it is public institute it should be free in all cases. The professor under student doing internship dont even interact with students in most cases, they just assign fancy topics to intern to print on certificates most of the time that will be the topic of the PhD student working under him. Yesterday one student visited our lab she did her master in padmavati mahila university Tirupati. She done her internship in one of CSIR labs which are related to the aromatic plant She wasn't able to even say the names of what she done at CSIR , out of curiosity i told " Did you work on purifying some aromatic compounds " then she said " No we were doing HPLC " she don't even know what is mean by column, types of column,, principle of different column to separate compounds like Size exclusion, ion exchange. Now she wants a job,how someone will offer a job . she is in such a mindset, I did my Internship at a prestigious institute it will help me to get a job. Companies don't care where you have done your Internship unless and until you find them technically sound. This will be my suggestion to all of my connections. Don't get panic when you when you didn't get Internship in this institutes, you can go to any small lab to adept in techniques For any help you can Contact me. #csir #dbt #Bsc #msc #career #growth #skills #techniques #

Meet José Arteaga Lajarín and Jorge Cervera Pérez-Hervada, undergoing their internship at Statens Serum Institut! Delve into their daily tasks and thesis topic together with us: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲? Most of our tasks are research related. We are constantly searching and validating new data related to our project. In a normal day we scout different databases with various parameters to look at industry trends, competitor’s products and macroeconomic dynamics to analyze the market and estimate the potential of our project.📈 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭? We are assessing the potential of the repurposing of a known medical drug into the infertility market. For this, we will analyze the industry, IPR related challenges and possible licensing deals.💊 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭? During our internship, we have been deepening our research skills and how to analyze a given industry. With this we are perfectioning our ability to summarize findings and data to present it to stakeholders. Additionally, we are getting a realistic image on how deeply connected all the different players in the industry are. #cbs #cbsbio #bioentrepreneurship #internship #statensseruminstitut

As a biotechnology student, one problem I have encountered is "Where to do internships?". As simple this question may seem, it's a concerning thing to us undergrads because even in Universities no one talks about it enough. The College authorities do get you internships at different places but, are they even useful? In my first year I chose to have faith in my faculty to arrange for a good internship program at a pathology lab, where all we did was observe people who worked there. I wouldn't consider it to be a waste but, I felt like I did not leave the place with a new *Skill*. •So I learned the hard way that internships are not about a certificate and a viva. It was incorporated in our curriculum to expose us to different techniques and opportunities in our field. •Development of skills required to thrive in the industry is the ultimate goal of an internship. Alot of big institutions like IITs , IISc conduct fellowship programs that most of us are not aware of. Do share your internship experiences in the comments! #science #skills #biotechnology #lifesciences
