The cultivation of oil palm is here to stay. However, a five-year study indicates that creating islands of native trees within oil-palm monocultures increases biodiversity and ecosystem functioning without notably lowering crop yields. Using a robust experimental design and presenting a variety of measures and analyses, the authors report convincing findings from a large-scale, five-year experiment to investigate ecosystem restoration in a 140-hectare oil-palm landscape enriched with 52 tree islands. The EU Biodiversity Strategy dashboard has just been enriched with 6 additional indicators! These include 5 indicators provided by the European Environment Agency (Increase in the number of remediated sites, Change in the concentration of nitrate in groundwater, Change in the concentration of nitrate in rivers, Change in the concentration of phosphate in rivers & Change in the concentration of total phosphorus in lakes) and one produced by the Joint Research Centre under the auspices of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries and further provided by Eurostat (Proportion of fish stocks sustainably exploited). The EU Biodiversity Strategy dashboard now contains 16 indicators to monitor progress towards 8 targets of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. Curious to know more?
