$META - Meta will appoint Republican Joel Kaplan to lead global policy team, replacing Nick Clegg Semafor Media reports that Meta is overhauling its global policy team. President Nick Clegg will be stepping down and replaced with Joel Kaplan, his deputy and the company’s most prominent Republican, people familiar with the matter said. Kaplan, a past White House Deputy Chief of Staff under George W. Bush, has been one of the loudest voices inside Meta against restrictions on political speech, "arguing internally that such policies would disproportionately mute conservative voices."

Meta's Nick Clegg to step down, will be replaced by well-connected Republican https://ift.tt/xq7pjA5 Nick Clegg, Meta's longtime policy chief, said on Thursday he is leaving his post and will be replaced by deputy Joel Kaplan, a prominent figure in Republican circles. Why it matters: The move comes shortly after CEO Mark Zuckerberg dined with President-elect Trump at Mar-a-lago and as Republicans will soon control all three branches of federal government. Meta also recently donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration. What they're saying: "As a new year begins, I have come to the view that this is the right time for me to move on from my role," Clegg wrote in a post shared with colleagues and then posted publicly on Facebook. "Joel is quite clearly the right person for the right job at the right time - ideally placed to shape the company's strategy as societal and political expectations around technology continue to evolve." Between the lines: Clegg says he will spend the next few months transitioning his duties and representing the company at a few international gatherings. The former deputy prime minister of Britain has spent the past seven years at Meta, where his most recent title was president of global affairs. Kaplan's new title will be chief global affairs officer, while Kevin Martin, former chair of the FCC, will take over his former duties. Kaplan was a deputy chief of staff to former President George W. Bush. News of Clegg's planned departure was earlier reported by Semafor. Go deeper... Nick Clegg, Global Affairs Chief at Meta, is leaving his post just 2 or 3 weeks after Zuckerberg dined with Trump. Clegg’s book, “How to Stop Brexit”, is now outdated, especially with Farage on the move in Britain. Farage, a close ally of Trump and one of the masterminds behind Brexit, continues to influence the political landscape. Meta appears to be fine-tuning itself for the new reality. Challenge accepted. Zuck is letting Clegg go, likely as the price for staying out of politics. If you don’t engage, politics will come after you. This radical shift seems like an anti-crisis PR stunt to demonstrate loyalty to a “royal” figure. How will Meta benefit? Probably, the DOJ won’t go probing its stance on social media policies. Meta hit $600, up 2.3%, better than other MAG7 stocks. Throwing Clegg under the bus was well-received by the market. Looks like affairs were not so global. The way from banning Trump to please him appeared to be very short and I can’t say Meta is a winner. #Meta #pr #communicatins #politics #crisiscommunications

Mark Zuckerberg and Meta achieved a significant victory in blocking the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a bill aimed at regulating social media to address issues like addiction and mental health risks for children. This success was largely due to support from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who expressed concerns about #freespeech and potential #censorship. Meta’s extensive lobbying efforts, including alliances with #advocacygroups like NetChoice and strategic donations to Republican lawmakers, helped prevent the bill’s passage. Despite #bipartisan support in the Senate and endorsements from influential figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr., the bill faced opposition from House Republicans citing First Amendment concerns. Efforts to revise KOSA to address free speech worries, including narrowing its scope, were not enough to overcome resistance. Critics argued that the bill still posed risks of censorship. Meta, while publicly supporting some safety measures, maintained opposition through lobbying and political contributions. Meta’s investment in Republican campaigns and projects, like a $10 billion data center in Louisiana, further solidified its GOP ties. The outcome illustrates Meta’s growing influence in Washington as Republicans prepare to take full control of Congress. Despite Johnson’s stated commitment to future legislation on online safety, advocates fear any new proposals will be weaker than the defeated bill. https://lnkd.in/dR6fTy8g? Mark Zuckerberg and Meta got a big win. They have the House GOP to thank.

"Clegg is right: algorithmic moderation *is* snowballing against harmless content. But it's platforms' approach to content moderation as a brand safety and #PR issue rather than as a community and content governance issue that really needs to change." ⬇️
President of Meta's global affairs Nick Clegg recently told The Verge that they moderate too much. Ask any SW, anyone sharing nudity, activism, LGBTQIA+ content or content coming out of P4l3st1n3 recently, or anyone doing research on this for that matter, and they'll respond with: "DUH." Meta may be greatly investing in #contentmoderation, but until a significant overhaul in policies, investments in human moderation, customer service and contextual governance happen, we'll still be here. Clegg is right: algorithmic moderation *is* snowballing against harmless content. But it's platforms' approach to content moderation as a brand safety and #PR issue rather than as a community and content governance issue that really needs to change. https://lnkd.in/ezG_kiA2

💥 Meta's Political Interference💥 The Australian Christians Party has worked very hard to develop a relatively large Facebook following. Currently, we have more Facebook Followers than the WA Liberal and National Parties combined. Yet, we recently noticed that our post's reach has fallen off a cliff. We appealed to Facebook to try to understand why this was happening. Today, a Meta Pro Team member named "Fern" sent us an email admitting that a restriction is limiting our posts "to reach a tiny number of your audiences" and that we had to review Facebook's Community Standards and stop violating them. However, as this post's image clearly shows, our Facebook page has zero violations and is even "recommendable." This means that Facebook is reducing the reach of a registered Australian Political Party without even citing a single reason. Know this - we are not taking this lying down. We are speaking to a number or organisations to see what our options are. Legal action is not off the table.

Without the necessary guardrails the consequences of Meta Platforms' business model is immense. Consequences that undermine democracies, incite violence and hate against vulnerable communities, and harm children. We urgently need stricter legislation to protect society from the dangers of weaponized #SocialMedia. The EU's Digital Services Act is a crucial first step, but global action is essential. Legislators - it's time to ensure comprehensive protection for everyone, everywhere. #ESG #humanrights #ProtectDemocracy https://lnkd.in/dYQEnQin

All the info I have about this inquiry is the article below, but if Labor really wants to go for Meta, designate Meta using the News Media Bargaining Code, and have your inevitable day in court. Use the tool that exists rather than on inquiry! "Labor goes to war with Meta in far-reaching inquiry" https://lnkd.in/gpU39VYU And, yes, of course there's more to discuss than news, and mental health is a big one (but not in a Jonathan Haidt direct causation way), but OMG going after Musk/X/Twitter and Meta using the same tools (as the article suggests) seems doomed to failure. They'll just spend their time pointing at each other's failings. Rather than an Inquiry, how about working out what best practice looks like, and legislating that. The *cough* Online Safety Act review might be such an opportunity!

The Oversight Board has issued a summary decision, overturning Meta’s removal of a Facebook post with an altered and derogatory depiction of U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz. This case underscores how overenforcement of the Community Standards can stifle political discourse, particularly during an election. 🔹 The case 🔹 In August 2024, a Facebook user posted an altered picture based on the poster for the 1994 comedy film “Dumb and Dumber.” In the altered image, the faces of the original actors are replaced by the U.S. presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. As in the original poster, the two figures are grabbing each other’s nipples through their clothing. The content was posted with a caption that includes the emojis “🤷♂️🖕🖕.” Meta initially removed the user’s post from Facebook under its Bullying and Harassment Community Standard, which prohibits “derogatory sexualized photoshop or drawings.” After the Oversight Board brought this case to Meta’s attention, the company acknowledged that its initial removal decision was incorrect and restored the post. Overzealous application of the Bullying and Harassment policy risks the undue suppression of political speech, undermining the public’s ability to critique leaders and candidates, even in jest. The restored post exemplifies a commonplace satirical take on politicians, easily recognizable as such. The Board has consistently advised Meta to enhance its procedures for assessing the context of content, particularly satire. Additionally, recommendations from prior cases have called for clear distinctions between content that constitutes bullying and harassment and speech that merely causes offense yet remains protected under international human rights law. Other previous recommendations from the Board have urged Meta to refine its Community Standards to include illustrative examples of acceptable content, especially where distinctions depend on the identity or status of the subject. Meta’s continued progress in these areas is vital for the fair treatment of users globally. #ContentModeration #Meta #Facebook #SocialMedia #USA #Election
