In this Summer edition of the #ConstructionEconomist, I collaborated once again with Susan Neil to describe the process of #quantifying carbon 🌿 in construction. 🏢 #Buildings have carbon emissions locked in them due to the #extraction of raw materials, #landpreparation, #manufacture of the materials and equipment used, the #construction 🏗 activity themselves and even future #repairs and #maintenance. Collectively, these are known as the #upfront or #EmbodiedCarbon in the #building. An whole building life cycle assessment will typically be used to determine how much carbon both embodied and operational a building releases throughout its life. In our article, we demonstrated example of how to measure carbon for select materials - #concrete, a structural material, and #carpet, an architectural material, based on specific #environmental product declarations, #EPDs. You can't manage what you don't measure. Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/eyiED_nU Hanscomb Limited, CIQS, RICS, Building Transparency

🌱🏗️ Did you know? Constructing the structural frame of an infrastructure emits a significant amount of carbon, known as embodied carbon, often overlooked in green building design. Most frames are made of non-renewable materials like steel and concrete, leaving a heavy environmental toll. 🛠️ It's time for a change! We need to rethink how we design structural frames to reduce environmental impact while maintaining safety and integrity. 🔧 Introducing the Structural Carbon Tool! This tool helps engineers: 1️⃣ Estimate carbon emissions in design 2️⃣ Identify opportunities for material reduction 3️⃣ Compare structural options 4️⃣ Communicate impacts with the team Let's build a greener future together! It's #ModularMonday! Today's Intro to Modular topic focuses on how modular construction reduces environmental impact. With modular construction, site development and building fabrication can happen concurrently since the project modules are made in the factory and then transported to the build site. This parallel process results in faster construction and reduced site disruption. The use of the factory for off-site manufacturing and the prefabricated, high-quality design of the modules reduces material waste and increases energy efficiency of each unit we build. This approach also gives the final buildings more longevity and durability, making both the structures and the construction process more sustainable.
