While we start offering more relevant courses at higher education; deep and foundational change needs to begin earlier.. by arming our young children with the skillsets to learn, adapt and create..
Global education faces a dilemma: Most conventional universities still offer curricula employers no longer consider valuable, while household income remains declining. The skills required for jobs are changing rapidly, and a massive talent shortage threatens the future of the global economy. In 2022, we joined forces with Nexford University to expand its program offerings, scale its technology, and boost student employability initiatives. This collaboration is a testament to what is possible when partners – united in purpose and vision – work together. The data showing the first decline in those eligible for free school meals going to university is worthy of a pause. It is the first decline since 2005/06. Why could this be happening? 1. The costs of going to university are perceived to be higher than at any previous point (cost of living, loan interest rates compared to 2005/06). 2. There are credible alternative choices available (degree apprenticeships, in work training and progression). 3. The value of a university education has come through a period of being questioned in a sustained way by the government of the day. In the end, it is one year of data but it should be a wake-up call. Tackling structural disadvantage is a long term investment and needs sustained effort. It is why we have moved into a new home in The Quad, Station Quarter, Telford. This is not a project. An initiative. It is a determined statement of commitment and intent to those currently not accessing our high quality education and leading employability outcomes from #Telford and wider #Shropshire that our door is wide open. Our new courses focus on pathways to well paid jobs which are future focused. We are in the community, integrated with Telford College and Invest Telford to demonstrate the value that education and skills will give individuals at different stages of their lives. Our #DiscoveryDay is an easy way to find out more. You are welcome to drop in on 2 November 2024. I am less concerned by the one year data in itself. I am concerned that it might represent individuals who have missed an opportunity which could be life changing. In the end, individuals have the right to make a choice. My only concern is ensuring that every person who has the potential to benefit from a higher level and university education has the barriers to doing so removed. We are actively seeking individuals and organisations willing to contribute to first and continuing year scholarships to support cost of living expenses. If you know a person from Telford, #Shropshire or the wider Midlands area who could benefit from a university education and excellent employment prospects, please encourage them to drop in. We are keen to ensure they have the information to make a good choice. #togetherwewillmakethedifference #opportunity #choice Telford & Wrekin Council Shropshire Chamber of Commerce NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Ricoh UK Capgemini Coforge JCB JLR TAFE - Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited Jacqui Smith GuildHE Future Leaders UK Agilent Technologies Schneider Electric ABP Food Group MULLER DAIRY (U.K.) LIMITED McConnel Faccenda Foods Ltd Shaun Davies

Take a few minutes to read this report and reflect on your perceptions of the TAFE sector
The Victorian TAFE Association was joined by the Hon Gayle Tierney MP, Minister for Skills and TAFE, this morning to launch new research into the value of TAFE and perception challenge. The TAFE Value and Perception Challenge Report, written by renowned social research firm McCrindle which undertook a comprehensive study encompassing a survey of 1,000 Victorians and in-depth interviews with career advisors, underscores the pivotal role of TAFE in providing a pathway for Victorians to secure and well-paid jobs in new and high-demand fields. Key takeaways: TAFE’s Value: TAFE courses are tailored to meet industry needs, equipping students with relevant skills for their career opportunities and enabling Victoria to meet future workforce demands. Employment Outcomes: TAFE employment outcomes (78%) match that of university graduates (79%). Earning Power: The median full-time earning power after graduating from TAFE (Cert IV and above) is $71,650, which is higher than that of university graduates (Bachelor degree) at $68,000. Course Diversity: TAFE offers courses in trades and more than 150 courses in areas beyond trades, including business and finance, ICT, nursing, and more. Dynamic Learning Communities: TAFE attracts a diverse range of students, from school leavers to adult learners, providing high-value, affordable education and increasing access to all. Future Opportunities: 80% of future jobs will be attainable via a TAFE education. TAFE unlocks opportunities and is a compelling option for future-proofing Victoria. Perception Challenge: Despite TAFE’s significant contributions, there are enduring negative perceptions about the TAFE offering and experience. The report explores these perceptions and communicates the value of TAFE for individuals, employers, and the broader community. Please like, repost and become an ambassador for the incredible jobs on offer and the value that TAFE brings to our community and economy. And a very good read -
I'm hugely appreciative of the Royal Society of Edinburgh giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts on the future of the Scottish skills system in the latest ReSource magazine. https://lnkd.in/dYZFmRRH I firmly believe that our colleges and universities play a pivotal role in our pursuit of a more prosperous Scotland, and that it's time to reinforce our commitment to education by affording our Institutes appropriate funding and enhanced autonomy. This edition also contains insightful and provocative contributions from Janet Brown, Dr Paul Little CBE, Colin Graham, Heather Douglas, Prof. Ian Rivers FRSE 🏳️🌈🇪🇺, Bonnie Auyeung, Fiona McNeill, and Edward Susu. Well worth a read. Young Academy of Scotland
