West Harlem arts centers share their stories of life after the pandemic S/O to Elliot Heath and The Columbia Spectator for this excellent profile of four of our grantees (The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds) and the crucial work that they do in our community. West Harlem has always been a haven for creative expression, boasting an array of arts-based organizations and community centers. With nonprofits in particular, outside funding and government grants help sustain programming, which can bolster community involvement. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, presented unforeseen hardships to small businesses across the city, including artistic centers. The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds, who all receive funding from the West Harlem Development Corporation, are four West Harlem-based organizations that faced such challenges. “I’m built different”- is my 12yr old son’s response to any and every compliment. And you know what, he is. We all are. You know what else is?? Innovations that are needed to close gaps, make a difference, and change lives. We have been wildly successful (check our data) at this. But the best part, we get to also support community organizations by making connections, providing business and innovation guidance, serving on boards, and showing up wherever they need us. At the Lexington Children's Theatre, we provide an educational space and creative outlet for all children, we provide sensory shows, and we meet our communities how they need us. We hear a lot about restricted grants in philanthropy, but not enough about the power of supports "beyond the grant." For years, Anne Marie Burgoyne and the team at Emerson Collective have been pioneers in providing out-of-the-box -- and totally transformative -- supports to their grantees. As Anne Marie writes: "Foundations often focus their time and attention on making large operating grants to nonprofits — and rightly so given their importance to grantees. Yet sometimes, untraditional support that falls outside of typical funding — so-called 'beyond the grant' opportunities — can have an even greater impact." One example: in recent years, Emerson funded 400 teams to visit the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. The theory was that by supporting organizations in having shared, immersive experience learning about America's history of racial injustice, they'd spark personal growth and team transformation. Not surprisingly, it worked. While the impact of these grants can't be easily measured in dollars & cents or lives saved....the ripple effect of these investments will be felt for decades to come.
