I spoke with Abdulrahman T. Bakir, Saudi Arabia's Managing Director for the Americas at the Investment Ministry on the sidelines of the FII Institute event in Rio last week. He said that before 2020, Saudi investment in Brazil was so small that it didn’t even appear in the central bank’s database for relevant foreign inflows. Since then, it reached $4 billion with major deals including: - Public Investment Fund (PIF) investing $400m in Patria Investments funds - Manara Minerals paying $2.6b for a stake in Vale's base metals unit - SALIC taking stakes in food producers Minerva Foods and BRF After helping to lead a Saudi delegation of 100 people last year to 7 countries in the region, he's planning to connect the top 20 family offices in both countries to look for opportunities in the near future. “Latam is one of the few regions where you have more opportunities than capital,” Bakir said. “In the Middle East, it’s the opposite. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected to arrive in Cairo today- according to Egyptian sources. - Major investments and projects expected, strengthening economic ties between Saudi Arabia and Egypt - Saudi Arabia announced a $5bn investment in Egypt by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the first phase last month. - Both countries have been working during the previous months on finalizing an agreement to promote joint investments. - Egypt is drafting a plan to offer the Red Sea's Ras Banas area for development, similar to the Ras El-Hekma deal. - Saudi Arabia may also be interested in developing another Red Sea coastline stretch, including Ras Gamila in southern Sinai. - The Saudi Egyptian Investment Company (SEIC), established in 2022 as PIF subsidiary, facilitates Saudi investments in Egypt.  - As of end-20203, Saudi Arabia held long-term deposits worth $5.3bn with the Central Bank of Egypt. - Trade between Saudi Arabia and Egypt increased by 41% in H1 of 2024, reaching nearly $8bn. - Saudi investments in Egypt are valued at around $26bn, involving over 8,000 companies, - Egyptian investments in Saudi Arabia are nearly $4bn, with participation from 3,000 companies.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) released its 2023 annual report, highlighting significant progress in key sectors both locally and globally. The report, meeting GIPS standards, showed a 29% increase in assets under management, reaching SAR 2.871 trillion ($765.16 billion) by the end of 2023, and $925 billion by July 2024. Since its inception, PIF has achieved an average total shareholder return of 8.7% per year, demonstrating its commitment to delivering long-term, sustainable returns and economic transformation in Saudi Arabia. Sovereign wealth funds controlled by oil-rich Middle East countries have furthered their domination of deals done by global state-backed investors to the highest levels in about 15 years. Institutions including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Qatar Investment Authority made up 54% of the $96 billion deployed by state-controlled funds globally in the first half of 2024, according to data from consultancy GlobalSWF. That’s the highest rate since 2009, it said. The figures reinforce how important the Middle East’s funds, which together control over $4 trillion of assets, have become for global capital flows.
