What do lasik surgery, roombas, and 3G have in common? They are all technologies we can’t live without which came to be via the SBIR program. iRobot, LASIK, and Qualcomm were all startups with no promise in sight of their financial or technology success when America’s Seed Fund stepped up to unlock funding so they could thrive. Thank you for helping us understand the impact of SBIR Erick Page-Littleford. Great start to 2024 Defense TechConnect Innovation Summit and Expo. Curious how you can shape our nation’s future? Come talk to me and learn what Fresh Consulting is doing to help lead the innovation effort.

Throwback ♻ : Earlier this year I published this article on why it is SOOO hard to commercialise a surgical robot. It still holds true today. https://lnkd.in/e69Dctnn For those that didn't get to the bottom of the blog - I'm pulling this one out as it is a core piece of understanding as to why Intuitive remains leader today with little challenge - and why admiration must be given to all of the chasing companies. It doesn't matter if you are a big strategic or small start up (up start 😎 ) this is a hard path to climb. So all companies need help and support to get up this peak. But it might help explain why the chasing pack is so far behind... #surgicalrobotics #roboticsurgery

Not sure how you're supposed to meet a potential Co-Founder, but what about antenatal classes? Mark Slack and Luke Hares were both thinking of innovating in robotics, so the timing was great. Now it's a matter of being in the right place.... Cambridge ecosystem = ❌ Antenatal classes = ✅ (top tier hand off by the wife) Since then, CMR Surgical has created a "small, modular & portable surgical robot is designed to make it easier for hospitals and surgeons to give patients access to minimal access surgery." They have raised over a 💲Billion and completed over 20,000 surgical cases to date (as off Q1 2024). Market Intelligence, by LSI projects the Surgical Robotics market to grow at a 12.5% CAGR (2022-2027) with one 800 pound gorilla at the very top. Wonder how we'll see this change in the next coming years.... Question for the founders out there, how'd you meet your co-founder?

I've been asked by so many people to do this post 💥 - so I've put this one on my Free section of my blog: (for the cheapskates 🤣 ) https://lnkd.in/d2zm8bU4 (some of you still haven't bough a subscription to the other stuff... really? 😂 ) People from all backgrounds #surgeons #employees #investors #researchers #marketreserach teams and people from #MandA #businessdevelopment have asked for this one. Sorry for the delay - but here it is. I've had people from #intuitive Intuitive #medtronic Medtronic Medtronic Robotic-Assisted Surgery Medicaroid #medicaroid Stryker #stryker Johnson & Johnson MedTech #johnsonandjohnson ask me directly or indirectly "How do you know if that #roboticsurgery company is healthy or not?" So - no real science - but here's my algorithm I use to put a wet finger in the air and judge the health of a #surgicalrobotics company.
What does a healthy surgical robotics company look like - and what does a struggling one look like?

“We need to think about servicing these potential customer sets who will be using and view robotics in a very different way from the current customer base.” Surgical robotics are more prevalent today than ever before. By 2028, it’s projected that nearly 1 million surgeries in the US will be performed each year using robotics. As the landscape evolves, pinpointing which robotic systems will best meet patient needs and streamline surgeries, in what specific settings of care, is essential. At #LSIUSA24, our panelists explored the nuances of integrating surgical robotics across different healthcare settings, discussed the strategies for overcoming barriers to access, and the future implications of robotic surgery on healthcare delivery and patient care. The full panel, ‘The Stratification of Surgical Robotics: The Right Equipment in the Right Place for the Right Patient’ is now available on our website and YouTube channel. Tune in to hear from this incredible group of panelists: • Joe Mullings (Moderator) — The Mullings Group • Greg Roche — Distalmotion • Evelyn T. — LSC - LifeSciences Consultants • Mike Clouthier — Medtronic • Scott Huennekens — Front Foot Ventures Want to see more content like this? KARL STORZ and Asensus Surgical acquisition introduces a wild card into the soft tissue, surgical robotic, imaging and navigation market. The acquisition is one thing, threading the needle to "what to do next" may be the bigger challenge. Both teams independently bring value to the table for each other. Getting caught in the tide of boiling the ocean with the potential partnership is going to be where diligence and discipline will need to be exercised. Tom Salemi and I discussed this on the "hot off the press" session of DeviceTalks we had on Friday. We go deep on the discussion of the possible deal Full session in comments.
